The exact date range is debated. Some say mid 80's to mid-90's. Some say 90's. Personally, I consider 1992-1999 as the golden age.

Before 1992, rap was predominantly local to urban metropolitan areas and the vast majority of those who are considered "golden age" rappers (like Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick) before 1992 were all out of New York City. Dr. Dre's 1992 "The Chronic" opened up rap to national appeal that covered all racial ethnicities. Once that dam was broken, a huge wave of musical creativity from all pockets of the country flooded the whole nation. In 2000, Eminem dropped his second album that became immensely popular and subsequently & inadvertently pushed rap into mainstream pop - which is why the golden age stopped at 1999.
