Notre Dame set to receive more than double previous revenue in new TV deal, per report

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that the Irish are set to more than double their current revenue from the NBC deal, from $25 million to around $60 million. The current agreement runs through 2025. Ourand noted that it’s difficult to predict how the media business will look 3 years from now.

So they are getting 60 million from NBC and let's estimate 10 million from the ACC for a total of 70 million so that is potentially 30 million left on the table in order to stay independent. I thought they would get closer to the 75 million. Regardless their contract with the ACC stipulates if they join a conference before 2036 it has to be the ACC so if this deal goes through I think it safe to say that ND is locked up for a while.

The only thing that could change this is if enough ACC members vote to remove the GOR and join other conferences which would void the ND deal. So really at this point the only potential movement we are going to see is between the Big 12 and PAC 12 and I don't see anything happening on that front until the end of the season.

If the figures are correct for the B1G and they are getting $350 Million from NBC and CBS and then $500 Million from Fox for a total of $1.2 Billion, after dividing that up among the 16 teams it's only $75 Million per school. So is this report is correct, ND is really only leaving 5 Million on the table from a television perspective.

You forgot the CFP component. ND will almost assuredly get in most years and shares for the CFP are in the $20-$30 million range, or more. This is one thing people often forget that is very valuable and that ND doesn't have to share with anyone else. This would put them at the same level or close enough to the B1G and SEC to let them stay independent.

Since they keep all their bowl money it is probably even closer and NBC probably cranked the calculator to illustrate just that. Another interesting twist is I think they get a better cut of the ACC Network if it outperforms, that is more equal to the other schools so that is another opportunity to close a gap.

Regardless (assuming the report is correct which is always dangerous) ND is going to be independent for quite some time. Of all the schools in the country, they are the ones I would be shocked if they tried to get out of a contract that stipulated if they joined a conference before 2036 it had to be the ACC. In fact, I would put more stock in ND keeping an agreement written on a napkin than most schools that had an actual contract.

It would seem that their $75M was a negotiation number. They never expected to land that number.

Negotiating 101, right? No one thought they would get $75 million. They only got the $60 million due to the fact they are the lead-in to the NBC prime time NBC game. That was a really good move for them.

Yeah, I agree. Although if you would have told me they would have gotten $60M a couple months ago, I would have said you're crazy. This will basically put us in line with what the B1G and SEC teams will make.

Always start high. The person that throws out the first number typically loses but in this case they had nothing to lose by leaking a massive number. If they had gotten it the AD would have passed out.

Not as much as you’d think. They guard the use of their logo. I remember being somewhere that sold a lot of sports themed equipment and apparel. But they had little to no ND merchandise. The owner told me that their licensing rights are limited.

Negotiating 101? Sounds more like “jewing” the shop owner down from their prices at the old Mercado in Juarez.

Shop clerk starts high, you’d go low and then the back and forth kept going. After you reached a deal, you walked away happy and thinking about how much you saved by “jewing” him down so far. At the same time he was counting his money and laughing about how he got to the dumb gringo so easily.
