Apparently some sort of beacon transponder wouldn't have worked very well. I wasn't Navy so I did not know this.

I do question why when there's a plane crash in the ocean they're always looking for the wreckage because the black box emits a beacon pulse. Said beacon pulse is RF and is powered by battery so it's time is limited. I remember them looking for Malaysian Flight 370 trying to locate it through it's black box beacon signal and that time was of the essence.
