Tipping is getting ridiculous

I make a pot of Folgers every morning, it might cost .35 cents.

I tip when I receive good service . No good service, no tip. It doesn't always have to be food related either.

I took my family on a very nice private 1/2 day sunset cruise on a sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago. The ship had a crew of 3. They allowed us help to raise sails & do some of the work to make the boat go. My kids helped, I drank lots of complementary alcohol & dragged my feet in the ocean on the bow of the ship. I tipped very well because that crew earned it.

I may go full jerk and stop tipping all together just to stick it to the tipping system. Boycott the whole thing because it is getting ridiculous. It used to be, and I was totally fine with this, you go get yourself a cup of coffee and the nice employee spins the ipad around and you give a $1 tip for your $3 coffee. Well now that $3 coffee has turned into a $6 coffee by itself and now the tips are getting into the range of $2.50-$3 per cup of coffee.

You know how when they show you the ipad with the three automated tipping choices, the lowest used to be like $0.75 and now the lowest is $2.50. So my once cup of coffee that was $3 and for being nice $4 total, is now in the range of $8.50. It's out of control. On top of that, it seems everywhere now is a tip option.

Find me a restaurant or coffee shop that does accept tips, that the employees are getting paid enough to where a tip is no longer needed.
I gave up when restaurants started slipping in fixed gratuities and “COVID service fees” and then still include the space for extra tips on top on that. So now I tip no one for pickup service.

Pay your workers a higher wage, instead of trying to scam your customers with hidden fees and guilt.

I tip almost everyone because of strong American values and generosity.
Fishing guides always get the best tips.

I only pay for coffee (aside from the grocery store) when I'm on a road trip. And it's always gas station coffee. The day I spend $5 for a cup of coffee is the day I blow myself.
If you can blow yourself, I wouldn’t wait for coffee prices to increase.

I don’t drink coffee.

But $5 for a cup seems better than having ribs removed.

Your people do not have a good reputation for tipping. I dont believe you

It's a circular dynamic. Servers think you aren't going to tip them well and give you lousy service. You're offended and pissed at the lousy service and ignoring of your table, so you either don't tip or leave a fucked up tip or a nasty note on the bill.

Just yesterday I grabbed lunch at Qdoba and their chip reader was malfunctioning. I was so annoyed I’m like you definitely are not getting a tip now.

Cow tipping is more dangerous than it used to be for sure. The uppity farmers have all kinds of cameras now, and hair triggers. Not really worth it anymore

Yep. Everybody out here in the country (including me) cell phones go off (video) when someone comes onto the property. "I knew you were here because I saw you turn down my lane".

You'd have to know where every security/trail cam is to avoid them.

My local gas station coffee is $1.50.

They have all the flavored creamers and syrups to make it a foo-foo coffee if you want it that way.

Once a week, usually Friday or a Saturday, I indulge myself with a high caffeinated coffee drink. So it's a once a week spending, but again the coffee shop is just one example of many with how tipping is making everything that is already becoming expensive more expensive.

What are people's thoughts on picking up take-out? If I am sitting in the restaurant a $5-$8 tip is reasonable, but what about if I order online/on the phone and go and pick it up? They spin that ipad around and ask for a tip.

I'm not going to disagree that tipping is out of hand. It used to be based on quality of service.

Stiffed if it was terrible service.
10% if average service.
15% if above average service.

Now 20% is almost mandatory. Those tablets start at 20%, then go to 22%, then to 25%. Of course there is an "Other" option where you can go less if you choose.

Regarding "Take-Out", I typically tip 10% because someone had to prepare the meal and get it packaged up.

Per the OP, I click the no tip option, and leave a dollar in the cup. You dont have to tip on the iPad, and there is usually a custom tip option as well.

I always pay my bill with a credit card, and tip in cash.

I don't care what they do with it regarding claiming it on their taxes. Not my business.

If it’s a higher end restaurant I’ll tip at most $4. All they did was cook it and throw it in a bag. All the hostess has to do is be able to read my name on the bag.

It's a little further than that.

I always check the bag/boxes to make sure the food looks fresh and the order is correct, then tip accordingly.
