Heupel is done

Just give another Hendon Hooker and you'll be fine

It's amusing that Florida and Tennessee have the same record, Tennessee just got wrecked by Florida, and Tennessee is ranked above them.

WTH was that?
FWIW, from a major rival:

- I don't want to get too far over my skis - The Swamp is a tough place to play, and UF has some talent. I was pulling for UF because I think they have about 4-5 more losses in their future whereas I felt you were more of a problem for us ... I wanted you to have at least 2 SEC losses before we come into Knoxville - say UF and Bama, with maybe one more out of ATM, Ky, USCjr, or Mizzou. So a UF win was in my team's best interest IMO. I like our chances, but I don't have the confidence I have had in the past 2 years and think we may drop an SEC game at some point this year. I think we need to win in Atlanta with 1 or 0 losses to get into the final 4 team field.

- I think that Kirby showed everyone how to defend Heupel's offense. It's not a sophisticated offense ... basically, go long and let a good QB hit some big plays. Throw in a decent to good run game, and then speed everything up. Well, you don't have the WRs and QBs you had last year, so teams can stop the run. And like all offenses that run on a gimmick - going fast - DC's figure out how to handle that. And, winning football has to be complimentary - if you speed up the O, the D gets tired quickly. And it's a D players don't want to play in. There is a reason that OU could never field a D worth a shit, nor can USC, and in fact, the entire B12 has that problem.

- That said, you may have such a QB on the bench, but he is young. If he is really good, then perhaps he should be who you are playing. There is a reason that Milton keeps losing the job - he's just not very good.

- If I were a UTjr fan, my question would be do I think that Heupel can (1) recruit well enough to fill in on the OL, build a D. I think he can get enough QBs, and WRs should be available in the portal (although why not this year?), and (2) can his offense evolve. You aren't going to get elite with the offense he runs, IMO. Before you disagree with me here, look at his digression at UCF:

YearTeamOverallConferenceStandingBowl/playoffsCoaches#AP°
UCF Knights (American Athletic Conference) (2018–2020)

2019UCF10–36–22nd (East)W Gasparilla2424
2020UCF6–45–3T–3rdL Boca Raton

You lost to UGA late last year, then USCjr, and have not looked good this year.

I never presume to know more about teams than the people who follow their team closely, so I could be way off and am open to that. Just thoughts from one opposing team fan.

We see this all the time though (think Michigan State 2021). A team gets 1 really excellent player that elevates their team, the performance is expected to continue (if not build upon) the next year, and then the team reverts back to struggling.

Joe Milton happened. I tried to tell Tennessee fans they weren't beating teams who had some talent on defense with him at QB.

If the NFL could draw up the perfect QB -- It'd be Joe Milton's body and Joe Milton's arm. But that's where it ends. Between the ears, he is easily confused by a defense and the guy's accuracy is erratic to put it nicely. He will make a throw that will amaze you and then make a half dozen throws where you will shake your head.

Even in simplified single read offenses like Tennessee runs -- he will have issues. He will get drafted in the NFL because of his size and arm, but he just doesn't have it between the ears.

Exactly. He has a cannon and is very athletic, but brains...not so much. I always said, if he couldn't get it done at Michigan, why would it be any different at Tennessee.

This description sounds eerily similar to Jalen Milroe

I'm not going to disagree with you, but I'm going to present the dilemma, conundrum, enigma whatever the hell you call it that coaches at the lesser name brand schools face. And a Catch 22/chicken or the egg situation they face. Enough of that stuff, you gave your opinion, here is mine.

I have to agree with you that defensive players don't like playing on teams with offenses that put them on the field too much. I also think those same defensive players don't want to play on teams whose offenses are so bad that all the onus of winning is on them. (And vice versa in both these situations, i.e. offenses that have the entire onus on them to score every possession.)

So if a coach is at a Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Purdue type school, do they install slower offenses in hopes they can attract enough of those very limited DL recruits in the future years? Or do they go after QBs, WRs that want to sling it around the yard in order to have a chance of winning sooner?

Thanks for saying Michigan State is struggling. Trying to give me hope by saying we aren’t absolute dog shit. We aren’t Nebraska bad, but we are terrible.

Michigan's version was Denard. Who cares about scheme, just run Denard! Who cares if the pass play broke down, just run Denard! Got worse every year after he left until Harbaugh.

But yes, MSU seems kinda like Nebraska bad...but it's early still and you're 2-1. Which is, in fact, better than Nebraska.

Yea Tennessee really needs to just cut their losses now and start Nico Iamaleava. Milton is going to lose them 3 or more games anyways, might as well get a jump with the 5* Freshman.

Washington -16 was an easier call than Duke -17 over Northwestern. There’s no real locks in sports betting, but that was a close as they come
