lol that wasn't Pennix.. the RB was the real star of last night's game.. This is going to be a crappy heisman year

You should still be able to abuse them like one of AG's foreign mail order girls.

My comment was in jest. You can't make many serious changes in 6 days. At least I hope not.

It was the right decision for USC long term but I don't think it will make much a difference for the remainder of this season.

I would agree, but in UW's system Penix has most of the discretion for going run/pass at the line based on motion checks. He did a first rate job on the road of reading that defense (yeah yeah, it's see spot run reading lol) and adjusting to what they were giving them.

He also has the permission to switch out of called plays if he sees matchups he really likes. The game winning back shoulder fade against Oregon for example was called as a pass to the right with multiple receivers out there. He saw a slight lean by the safety leaving Odunze 1 on 1 on the left side alone and made a slight head nod to him to let him know he was going his way and the rest is history.

Because of all of the years he's been around DeBoer and Grubb he has a lot more trust to change things up than most QB's get. At least in these NFL style high motion offenses anyway. I get air raid style have options every down etc.

I just wanted to bring up AG's cheap rental dates in a humorous manner? :noidea:

Wait a minute...USC had a defensive coordinator?
Think of it like how the US has an immigration czar. Sometimes hoops need jumped through boxes need checked an sech

Maybe someone should try hiring Grinch as an OC and Ferentz as a DC?

My favorite (and less publicized) move from today was elevating Taylor Mays from Defensive Analyst to On Field Assistant working with the safeties.

Mays was a 3x All-American safety during the Pete Carroll era who loved to hit people.

Hopefully he can get the current safeties to play like that.

Won't matter. The defense has two issues. These are the same issues that plagued OU.

1. Strength and conditioning. Wylie is an aerobic S&C coach. He focuses on building lean players who have stamina and endurance. Strength and muscle mass take a back seat. It will make for lighter lineman that can't get push.

2. Riley will focus the majority of recruiting resources on offense. A good 70/30 mix.

As long as Wiley remains and Lincoln continues to be OC/HC, the defense will always be subpar.

It depends, imo.

Their front 7 isn't going to get any bigger in the next week and there probably isn't a lot that can be done about the tackling issues this late either.

But if they just settle on what type of defense they want to play, simplify it and stick to it, that should help some. One of the DB's, Calen Bullock, was asked about the big plays and he said that the biggest issue on almost all of those plays was guys being out of position/not knowing where they're supposed to be.

The game vs Washington basically came down to Washington's defense was able to force USC to punt twice and USC's defense was only able to make Washington punt once.

Assuming the game vs. your Ducks is a shootout, can they improve enough to be the defense that gets that 1 extra stop? Maybe. But considering the game is at Autzen, I'm not putting any money on it. lol

I don't know. The "new coach bump" is a real thing. It's not unusual to see a team/unit play better, more inspired football when a new voice comes in.

It's usually not sustainable though. There are only 2 games left and then whatever bowl game they go to. We'll see if the defense can use that to actually improve some.

Not holding my breath though. lol
