In a conversation with The U.S. Sun, the expert explained that security concerns and consumer preferences may be the main drivers of these changes.

"From a security standpoint, what's happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees, whether it's security or other employees to help people at self-checkout.

"So, you know you're not accomplishing anything. You're not reducing labour, you're not getting a better shopping experience."

Honestly, I don't like it at grocery stores. At a bigger store or in cases where I'm buying one or two things it's certainly faster and more convenient, but at a grocery store when I'm buying food for my family, it's a pain in the balls.

Way back in the day, one of my buddies used to beat the system by buying an expensive bottle of wine using a cheap (same size bottle) UPC. So he'd get a $30-$40 bottle of wine for $8.

ive accidently taken items during self checkout.

with the stores having all these fucking apps now. i usually scan the item with the app to see if there is a discount, then the product. sometimes i've scanned my app but not the product.

they it where you can scan the item as you shop and pay on your app....

yes and they only give you like 1 or 2 little areas to try to keep all your bags on. or you have to put the bags in the fucking cart and move stuff around in the cart

You were suppose to be able to push your entire cart thru a scanner by now, all at one time, and it reads everything.

Of course that never happened.
 
I usually order my groceries online and then go pick em up when ready since I hate shopping in general.

If I have to go in for something, I always use the self checkout. Not interested in making small talk with old women or teenagers

I like them in theory.
In practice, at least at the stores where I've used them (or tried), they suck.
First of all, I don't like machines talking to me.
Secondly, the fucking things don't work they way they're supposed to work.
There's always something that doesn't scan properly, or some damned issue, then I have to wait for someone who works there to come do whatever it is to make it work, and they're all pissed off because the self-check is supposed to make their jobs easier.

I'd rather just go through a regular line. It may take longer, at least sometimes, but I'm not expecting to breeze though line, which is the expectation when I do self-check out, then I find myself annoyed when it doesn't happen that way. Mind you, if that's the biggest issue I have during my days, I have a pretty damned good life.

Sam's Club has it right with their mobile checkout. I scan things on my phone as I put them in the cart and pay on my walk out the door. The only line I wait in is the one to leave and I don't have to handle my items more than once.

At Costco atleast somebody else unloads and reloads my cart, but I still have to wait in a line to checkout.

checkout kid at Publix last month forgot to scan the $10 bottle of vanilla and the bagger noticed it didn't beep and slid it back. Checkout kid put it in the bag he was filling with eggs and bread. So I got a free bottle of vanilla extract just for using the regular checkout.
 
It says that the 'shrink' in stores that use Self Checkout, is double what it is without.
It goes from 2% to 4%.

100% preferred route at the grocery store and target.

However, they need to be treated like the express aisle. 20 items or less.

Pepperidge Farm remembers. That would have been A-OK with me. It's not like we don't have the tech for it, so why are they still draggin' their feet?

It's just like with muh flyin' cars. We could totally do it, but the "right people" haven't figured out how to make money off it yet.

If I'm at the Rite Aid and I've got 3 things, I'll use the self-check. Easy peasy. Grocery store, I don't know what all those vegetable codes are, so I'm going to make the clerk ring it all up.
