Brent Venables signs extension at Oklahoma

So, here the schools are whining and bitching about not having enough money and fiscal sanity, and then OU coughs up a ton of money from a coach that no other school was trying to poach who may or may not be successful. I happen to believe he will do well at OU. OU is the type of program that a very competent coach can do well at, not even a great one. But there is no reason to commit to 6 years like this at this stage in time. Fuck the schools and their whining about not having the money to pay the players.

it's just a pay raise with 2 years added to his original contract..

THis was done for recruiting purposes.. think the #1 negative he and his staff were fighting was how he wouldn't see contract #2.. I'm only guessing because earlier in the year, they were getting CBs/Fong's for some elite guys who all of the sudden are looking elsewhere..

Sooners fans are justifying this by saying he brought stability and that he has a better trajectory than Sark at UT after two seasons.. Guess we'll see.. think his team last year overachieved and do think this years team will take lumps this season.. he has to be better than 2-7 vs ranked teams.

still think his '25 team will be his best team

a pay raise for a coach that no other school wants

cool stuff
yeah that's the other thing.. why after two seasons? Maybe they are a little chaffed after LR left them for SC.. guess worried that Arkansas would swoop in for BV..UF maybe too?

@Thiefery nailed it. It was for recruiting reasons. OU's been doing great in recruiting after Riley was the mad ex-wife who cleaned out everything including the cupboards. OU was starting all over. Last year Dillon Gabriel carried the team to a surprising 10-2 season and a last second W in the RRSO but he's gone now. This season is going to be gnarly. Maybe as many as 5 L's and probably 4 L's. But OU's recruiting has been stronger than a garlic malt. So the thinking is OU needs to show Venables is The Man and let him keep plugging holes in a O that was decimated when he took over and a D that had a soft creamy nougat center. OU has its fingers crossed that by 2025 we will be back to where we want to be. It's all on Venables now that he has his contract, his staff and he's getting the type of players he wants. We'll see.

your guys really think y'all will get Fasusi too

Any player worth anything is bolting to the NFL in 3 years max.

Not sure this has much to do with that….more likely he’s getting a raise for getting ready to coach in the SEC, bringing him in line with the salaries in play in that conference.

ehhh maybe it wasn't for recruiting purposes.. longtime lean is starting to get CBs to Bama now... Gibson canceled his OV to Norman as well...

I wasn’t a Jimbo fan at all but I like BV. That said, this resembles Jimbo/A&M to me. Hope I’m wrong.
I hope you are too!

I have faith (stupid, right?) that our AD knows what he’s doing. BV was most of our choice to succeed BS. Didn’t happen for whatever reason…but Jimmy Greenbeans and family finally made it home. His previous successes don’t mean shit, and he knows that better than anyone. Dude is a coaches’ coach and I for one couldn’t be happier with him….well, if he were to bring home the hardware I’d be happier.

...and there were many other opportunities. I'm thinking he just REALLY liked kicking the ACC in the dick on the regular. It must have gotten boring?
