It's so funny. This new kitten (she's almost 9 months, already, but she was over 5 when I took her in) has such a side-eye. I showed a video of her giving said side-eye to one of the TKD parents I like, and she said to me, "yep, she was meant to be your cat." Heehee.
There's nothing quite like a withering look from such a small creature.

As far as missing your daughter, my best friend just went through her only child going off to college last fall.
It was an adjustment, but their relationship is better than ever.
