I grew up near where they were killed in NJ...it's all back roads and cornfields...I can see some asshole in a car hitting them

this is really fucked up...like, what do you do with that?

According to a public post on a popular wedding site, he and Matthew Gaudreau were scheduled to be groomsmen in their sister Katie’s wedding Friday in Philadelphia. Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith, is listed as maid-of-honor.

This is unfathomably tragic. Holy shit.

Gaudreau, 31, and his 29-year-old brother Matthew were riding bikes on County Route 551 in Oldmans Township, Salem County on Thursday night when they were struck by a man driving a Jeep.

Police said the driver, 43-year-old Sean Higgins of Woodstown, New Jersey, attempted to pass a slower vehicle when he hit the Gaudreau brothers.

here's more info...Higgins might have been drunk...I am thinking likely was.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Pennsville Auburn Road near Stumpy Lane in Oldmans Township.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were traveling north on County Route 551, close to the line on the side of the roadway.

Police say 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, of Woodstown, New Jersey, was traveling north on County Route 551 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he allegedly attempted to pass a slower-moving sedan and SUV.

Police say Higgins entered the southbound lanes of the roadway, and passed the sedan.

When he attempted to reenter the northbound lanes, police say the SUV in front of him moved into the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes in order to safely pass two bicyclists on the right side of the road.

Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right and struck the Gaudreau brothers from behind, troopers said.

If not drunk, it at least reckless driving. That extra detail has me believing this Higgins dude is probably getting charged with two counts of manslaughter along with whatever else the local police feel like throwing at him.

this is the road around where it went down...not the best road for biking, esp at night...but still they shouldn't have gotten hit

I live on country roads just like that. The speed limit is 45 and most people push 50-60. When I take my dogs for walks in the evenings, it's always before the sun hits the horizon because it gets pitch black out there. I also walk or bike against traffic - even in full daylight - so I have more awareness and control of traffic.

Riding bikes in the dark on country roads with traffic wasn't the best decision the guys ever made, but it dam sure wasn't egregious enough to die over. Terrible.

it shouldn't be "dark" at 830 these days...but visibility is definitely reduced.

sounds like he tried to pass 2 vehicles without knowing they were going slow because of the cyclists. When he went back into the lane, he hit them from behind and killed them

basically being overaggressive on the road and likely had some booze in his system.

Horrendous news

Sending prayers to the Gaudreau family

My daughter went hiking with friends yesterday evening. I happened to glance out the window of my living room - which faces west - and was struck that it was pitch black out - so dark I couldn't see the tree that's only about 25' from the window. I looked at the clock and it was 8:35. No bullshit. I thought to myself "I hope they can see where they're going."

Holy shit.

So this asshole was trying to pass the SUV and when the SUV moved to the center of the road, he thought they were trying to block him from passing so he aggressively went to pass on the right. Sounds like this guy thought he was Mario Andretti but learned he's more Mario Van Peebles at these poor kids' and their family's expense. Tragic.

I often think bikers choose to ride on some ridiculously dangerous roads and I think they're fucking idiots for that, but still, I exercise serious caution around them. If there is on coming traffic, I'll slow to their speed and pass them once I have room to go into the oncoming lane.

Sunset in that area tonight is 7:34pm. It'd be pretty dark by 8:30pm.

I can see alcohol being an influencer here too...but also drivers can be full on assholes.

I think ford started a thread here bitching about "bikers" when he meant cyclists..and I get it to a point...but you have to be aware of them on the road, just like pedestrians walking

I called them bikers and that's what I meant. They ride bikes. They're bikers.

nah...they are cyclists and they ride bicycles.

bikers ride motorcycles
Sorry, ill, you're going to have to take that up with Merriam-Webster.

I am sticking to this one...basically all cyclists are bikers but not all bikers are cyclists.

but I guess motorcycles are cycles...

let's agree to disagree and fuck it out

I meant hug

Uber would've cost that guy no more than $30 and instead it cost him 3 lives, his included because he will or should be in prison for the rest of his life.
