This is the year

You're treating this as pay-for-play, which is fine, but players will still be able to do deals outside of that to make money on name, image, likeness.
For sure, just like anyone else can or should be able to. Right now it’s just a mess though. Collectives and boosters getting creative with it wouldn’t need to be such a thing. Go do a commercial for the local plumbing company or whatever.

Hell, they should be. Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin, Washington.
Of course and yet history suggests it is still more likely they drop one than the sum of the odds of them losing any individual game combined. And it could be against any of them. Having a down game somewhere is just normal in the sport.

I do too. Which was the reason I asked. And from reading the articles concerning their joint meeting in Nashville, they are going to be sure that happens in the future if the CFP committee doesn't take care of it anyway. Which, like you say, I think they will.
This is why I think there is huge advantage to playing at home. You may not have a huge talent gap in the first round. We tend to think 3rd/4th teams in the Big or Sec aren’t capable, but they may have 2 losses to top teams early. Maybe they had some injuries or just got beat by a better game plan and have now addressed those issues. This is a season where Bama lost to Vandy on the road. I love the format, because it gives teams chances for redemption. I would just rather play that 1st round game at home, because it would be a much harder task starting your run in Death Valley, Happy Valley, Ann Arbor, or the Shoe. Keep in mind Big 10 honks have been talking about the SEC having a weather advantage in bowls for decades. We are going to see if that is correct. Texas has generally been a passing team under Sark imagine the difference between playing in Austin and Ann Arbor in December. We may see SEC teams play games in the snow in the playoffs

Wisconsin is the one that's the trickiest IMO. It's on the road in a cold and rowdy environment. Wisconsin is trending up right now and I think they're starting to play good ball. Wisconsin is coming off a bye before that game and Oregon's last bye was September 21st. That will be Oregon's 8th straight conference game.

And the later in the year it goes, so does the potential for key injuries to reduce the team gameplay potential.

Of course it is far more likely Oregon drops one of the road games than the home games, but we've seen so many weird upsets this year up and down the ranking list to take anything for granted.

That's true but that also favors teams that have recruited better and have more depth.

Best 8-4 team in the country. Or 5-7

Oh I like this format as well. I think it was well thought out by the guys that put it together. I especially the home field/on campus and the bye weeks portion. Makes teams "keep playing" because of where they might land. Either maintaining their spot or trying to get in later in the season. I'd even take it further though. I'd like the 2nd round games on the campuses of the 1-4 seeds. But I'm in the minority and not enamored with bowls like some are. I'm not in love with the auto seeding portion of auto bids. I'd prefer just the top 4 teams. But again, I think I'm in the minority.

It would be better if a team was out.
Name one sport in all the world that does it that way. One. You can't because it's beyond stupid to have a single loss effectively eliminate a team from playing for a championship. The stupid format we had before made it so that half the teams were eliminated after the first week of the season. It was insanely stupid.

You will get you wish as we continue into the end of the season. There will be many, many games coming in which a team will be “out.” Many more elimination games than ever. Especially later in the season ones.
He's a Michigan Man, he's not smart enough to understand that.

But not between the top team, they’ll be between the 7-12 teams. Ohio State could probably lose to Penn state or Michigan and still be in at this point in the year. Same with Oregon. The remaining games mean less now for the top teams than ever before.
That after last week you can say that is hilariously wrong. One of the best weeks in CFB in years. The idea that many of those teams would be eliminated is a joke. If they play again they will still be great games. Only shitty fans think like you.

What? Wait? I thought B1G schools had very high admission standards and only "smart" applicants were accepted. Like Stanford, Rice, Harvard, MIT, Ga Tech, Vandy, etal No?

I said that the minute the format came out - genius. And I don't think the bowls will always be involved that way ... not everyone loves them.

Take a look at the 14 team format ... it results in 6 of those home games in week 1. My only problem with it is that they have so often gotten the 1 and 2 seeds wrong. And with the SEC and B1G likely saying they will get the 2 byes, I can see the best team having to play an extra game. But the 14 team format is actually pretty cool in week 1.

Meh. I don’t think teams outside the top 6/7 have a legitimate shot in a playoff to do anything but knock a “top” team off.
Oh, the horror ... a great game where a top team gets upset ... who in the world would want something exciting like that? You really advocate for less good football and call yourself a fan. LOL.

Just my opinion, but I think Big 10 and SEC will get a minimum of 3 teams in the playoffs the vast majority of the time. You don’t want to be that 3rd team though. There is a 100% chance you have to play an extra playoff game to win it all and a decent chance you open on the road

Ah, the weather advantage trope. You mean both teams playing under ideal weather - indoors - somehow favors the southern teams? If you need weather to win, just get better at football.

Now, if you want to argue that the southern teams have an advantage because most of the bowls are in the South and their fans can get there more easily, that makes more sense. But the idea that you will finally get one over on the southern schools because you want to play in a blizzard is hilarious.

It used to be college football -- a sport that was better than the rest. Turning it into "the rest" makes it worse, not better.

it was a great weekend of football, that probably would have been even better if some of those games had elimination on the line. Alabama's was particularly great because not only was the game a back and forth close game with wild turns, but elimination was probably on the line for Alabama.
