This.I think this is a big step forward. But I don’t know why it took this long for this to happen
Times change.I think this is a big step forward. But I don’t know why it took this long for this to happen
MLB is probably the most record-oriented of all the major sports, and the negro leagues records are all over the place. Recordkeeping, for obvious reasons, wasn't a priority in the negro leagues. For example, nobody is quite sure how many homers Bob Gibson actually hit in the negro leagues. Some say it was as little as 200, others say it was as many as 900 (fat chance)I think this is a big step forward. But I don’t know why it took this long for this to happen
If the players in those other professional baseball leagues were locked out of MLB, then yes.No disrespect but so does every professional baseball league now get recognized as major leaguers?
Black players aren’t the only players locked out of the major leagues. Japanese players were and so were Cubans once Castro took over.If the players in those other professional baseball leagues were locked out of MLB, then yes.
You make good points with Oh and Ichiro. Well....certainly Ichiro. Was Oh denied the ability to play in MLB by MLB in his time?Black players aren’t the only players locked out of the major leagues. Japanese players were and so were Cubans once Castro took over.
This a dumb PR move but they better be consistent and consider Sadaharu Oh as the all time home run king and Ichiro as the all time hits leader.
No, and neither was Ichiro to start his career. It does make for good banter but I just think this is dumb unless you consider every player that got rejected by the MLB owners because they were believed to be inferior or political reasons like Cubans. Virtue signaling is fine but unless they rename the Cy Young Award after Paige then it is a massive insult IMO to Negro League players or just black people in general as saying “you’re equal but not really”.You make good points with Oh and Ichiro. Ultimately, I don’t see them taking the records. This is a token move, so it won’t end being pertinent IMO. But, it does make for interesting conversation.
What if they want to change Cy Young to Satchel Paige? I could see something like this happening way more than taking in their records. A traditional game trying to make headway and hold on as a sport.....it could be a thing. No, and neither was Ichiro to start his career. That is what I was saying. Instead of a token demeaning gesture, if they want to say they are major league players then the Cy Young Award needs to be changed to the Satchel Paige award. White players also agreed that Paige was the best pitcher in the era. What if they want to change Cy Young to Satchel Paige? And good call on the Japanese players. I just let it flat slip my mind they were non grata until Ichiro. If they were to be dumb enough to try to fold in questionable record keeping of the Negro Leagues they do have to include Ichiro for sure.
They already said no to this. The question is, will they alter the official MLB records? Personally I'm ok with Josh Gibson being #1 in HRs instead of Bonds.
Too bad, I'd rather see Gibson at #1 than Bonds. They already said no to this.
So would almost everyone.Too bad, I'd rather see Gibson at #1 than Bonds.
