Took the "gap year" route? I can see the benefit of it for the more responsible young people.
They didn't call it that back when I did it, but I really think my year off helped me to work harder once I enrolled. I knew I was going for my own education, not my family's. Plus, I was borrowing all the money myself. Being a year older than the other freshmen made me a little wiser

I was anything but a responsible young person.
I finished high school early (although not by the traditional route), and did a semester of college when I was 17.
I did well, but I hated it.
I took a few years.
I'm not saying I would recommend that route for everyone, maybe not even most, but by the time I did go to college, it was because I really wanted to be there. There's no way I would have done as well as I did had I not taken the time I did.
This is my worry for our daughter, she would enter college as a 17 year old. I'd be fine with her taking a year off if she found a decent job or internship. But she just wants to have a year off to relax. She's also feeling some pressure to know what she wants to do for a career, and we keep telling her that a big part of college for many people is to figure that part out while you're enrolled, or even after. So many people we know have degrees that are not related to their eventual career

Just thinking back on myself and the guys that went to school with me. If we hadn't gone straight to college after HS, we probably would have not gone at all. Although, I think only two of us got degrees in the programs we initially started. Personally, I had 3 majors before actually getting my degree in the 3rd.
I have a nephew that graduated last May, said he was going to work a year before going to school. He'll never go.

Have to hand it to you for getting to that first.

I think "gap year" is a Brit expression and usually involves more travel than work.

Lots of people had that same fear for me. But my dad was all cool about it. He even helped me find work after high school. He was probably the least surprised when I told him I was finally ready. One of the few things we ever did together, just him and me, was to go for the orientation weekend. I told him, "you know, once I go I probably won't ever come back home."

So what's everyone been up to? Have a nice holiday? New Year? I'm currently spending it in strict quarantine, as I have become a statistic. Started feeling a little sniffly leading up to Christmas, but was thinking (hoping) it was just a result of too much running around and I was getting burned out. Last Tuesday, it hit. Felt like a moderate flu - body aches, more sniffles, a little coughing and a fever (101.3 was the highest) so I had a test done that day. I've pretty much been in bed for a week, except to take the dog out. I only had the one day of bad-ish symptoms, but I've been ridiculously tired and I battle insomnia, so it's not been a lot of fun. Drugs only work for a few hours and I still keep getting low-grade fevers every once in awhile. The nurse said to feed the furnace, but I don't really have an appetite, so it's a piece of candy two or three times a day and lots of water & tea. My boss doesn't want me working, but I'm fucking bored out of my gourd, so I'm just cleaning up email & shit. Happy New Year!

my prayers are to you, my friend, for a quick recovery.

For me - I am trying to heal the feet in 2021.

On jan 1, I started intermitted fasting (I only eat between 12-6 PM). I cut out my triggers (sugar in coffee (only black now), Cereal, peanut butter, and milk).

I would trust my Daughter to take a year off between but if my Son did this.... it would be a different story. He doesn't have (or hasn't displayed) the ability to be driven and focused like my Daughter.

Definitely not what I did. I think I might have driven to Charlotte once or twice on the weekends

:puke: I would rather stop drinking coffee than drink it plain. I'm a sugar junkie. Cereal is one of my favorites, too. I think I have 6 boxes in the house now... trix, honey smacks, frosted mini wheats, frosted flakes, capn'crunch and probably raisin bran. But i'm outta milk. I need to do that instacart thing today because I'm out of orange juice (and i've gone through half a case of sparkling apple cider) but i friggin' hate it.
Good luck with the IF though.
