Only, regardless of ones opinion on climate change....most of us agree the climate is changing and having a bit more extremes.

With that, and the pain these companies will continue to feel from this mess, I think you have to put these measures in place before the next one hits.

we do a winter readiness campaign as well as one in summer to prep for seasonal issues.

we are pretty set for winter as our turbine is in a building where as a lot of southern plants just put them outside. our turbine deck will hit 100°F in the summer inside
 
The water is the big issue now. most homes are on a good rolling blackout schedule now..

We haven't had water issues and our front door is now a revolving door for people to come take showers.

Tuesday I had to borrow a wet vac from my neighbor and go over to a friend of my wife's to clean up water on the floors from a burst pipe.

She's coming over sometime today to take a shower.
 
We never lost power once <knocking on wood> but we did lose internet for most of the last two days. it would come up long enough to load emails and a couple of times I tried to get on here but couldn't for more than a post or two. Not gonna knock it though with a lot of coworkers and friends going through hell.

Heat doesn't take a lot of the new electricity generators offline. This was an issue in 2011 as well and was supposed to have been addressed. instead the well paid ERCOT board members that don't even live in Texas just sat back and cashed checks. They should all be fired, and likely will be.
But this was a fuel to generators and extreme cold taking them offline problem. Texas isn't built for 0 degree weather.

piping in coal plants is freezing and that part of the issue.

turbines are freezing because they are not built to withstand cold temps like this.

what code?

you have a plant in TX that you don't expect will ever see freezing temperatures. What are you insulating the pipes for?

and even if you are, who's to say the insulation will be enough? We have heat trace in a lot of our lines to make sure the fluid flows in the winter.

coal, or natural gas? Because I haven't heard of coal piping being frozen. Lack of winterization for the coal turbines keeping them from being brought up as backup, perhaps. But brought up means something else already failed. That something else is wind.

Building code?

Here pipes have to have insulation to meet code specs. They don't know what the hell they are doing down there!
