Former Miami Marlins president David Samson called Barry Bonds' one-year tenure as the club's hitting coach in 2016 a "complete disaster."

Samson explained Thursday during an appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz (via Audacy's Jesse Pantuosco) that Bonds was pushed on the front office by former owner Jeffrey Loria and proceeded to put no effort into the role.

"He had fun as a hitting coach because he would hang out with [Giancarlo] Stanton and give Stanton some pointers. But he was ineffective, completely," Samson said. "He would sleep in the clubhouse. He would not pay attention during games. He did not work hard. It was a complete disaster."

The former Marlins president, who also worked under Loria with the Montreal Expos, noted the problems with Bonds started during the initial interview, with MLB's all-time home run leader making a steadfast demand for a $1.5 million per year contract.

"It was the worst interview I've ever been a part of," Samson said. "Bonds was an absolute pain in the ass about pay because he knew he had the job."

He added the moment that stands out most is when Bonds stormed out of the clubhouse while second baseman Dee Strange-Gordon was apologizing to the team after receiving an 80-game suspension following a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.

"Barry Bonds, in the middle of the clubhouse, he's standing toward the backdoor, he screams, 'This is crap!' and he walks out," Samson said on Le Batard's show. "I look at [general manager] Mike Hill and I say, 'Are you kidding me?' Like Barry Bonds just stormed out as though he can't believe one of the players did steroids? Is that really possible?"

Bonds hasn't been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame despite his worthy numbers in large part because of suspicion he used PEDs, though he never tested positive in an official MLB test.

Samson concluded "no one got better" during the 14-time All-Star's year as hitting coach.

What's up, he can't teach them to inject steroids as well as he did?

Shocking.
Not really. Barry Bonds is a despicable cheater. His methods as a hitting coach were probably:

1 - Encourage the consumption of PEDs.
2 - Act like an asshole to everyone around.
3 - Shrug and/or fall asleep in response to peoples' expectations.

That’s actually not it at all. Most people who are really good at something (and even before the juice, BB was very good at hitting a baseball) are really bad at teaching people how to do it. How many great players in any sport turned into great coaches? Most great coaches who played the game were mediocre players at best and only got good enough to go pro because they studied and worked harder than everyone else.

Bingo!

Superstars never make good coaches because playing the game to them comes naturally. You can't teach something to someone you never had to "learn" yourself.

It's the guys who had to bust their ass in the batting cage and the bullpen every day who will make the best teachers because they have their own learning experience they can draw from.

Horse. Shit. Bonds was and is an unrepentant cheater.

PEDs are detrimental to baseball, and their apologists frequently go to the "but they won't help you hit a baseball!" excuse. It's untrue. Major league pitching is difficult, yes, but even minor league hitters are adept enough to make contact. Boost muscle mass, and reaction speed to unnatural levels and grounders become singles, singles become doubles and doubles become home runs. The benefit to hitters becomes apparent faster than you can send a text to Miguel Tejada's pager.

The 2nd half of Bonds' career came during a period in baseball where the longball was elevated to an incredible level in fan culture. Bonds was never going to be good as a coach because he's an asshole, not just because his "skill" relied upon chemical support. Not to say assholes don't sometimes make good coaches, but Bonds had nothing else to fall back upon.

Bull.

Fucking.

Shit.

I hate Barry Bonds because of his titanic cheating, but pretending that he wasn't the best offensive player of his generation, pre-PEDs, is ridiculous.

He's the only 400 homer - 400 steal player in the game's history, and almost certainly would have been a clean 500 - 500 player (he had 411 HR and 445 SB after his age-32 season, before the roiding).

The steroids took Bonds from "maybe the best speed/power hitter ever" to best hitter since Ruth, and anyone who tries to claim otherwise is silly, but pretending that Bonds wasn't a generational talent before he took a single shot is almost as stupid.

I'm not talking about his pre-PED career. I subscribe to the notion that he was a great player as a Pirate and most likely a HOFer.

Where the point he began roiding is debatable, but likely it happened 1-2 years before he swelled up like a blimp. He willingly tarnished his own reputation and entire career, in a mad quest to fraudulently achieve one of the greatest records in baseball. Everything he did once he roided up invalidate his entire career, not just the portion where he didn't give a shit about his teammates or winning, was a colossal asshole and wore a suit of armor at the plate. "Generational talent"? Please. That's like saying Brady Anderson was a virtuoso center fielder in 1996.

I feel like the outburst at Gordon being suspended wasn’t actually the way Samson sees it. I’m pretty sure the “this is crap” comment was to the fact that the league is suspending a player for PEDs. Maybe a little too close to home for old pumpkin head.

Samson....sheesh. That guy is a major shmuck in his own right. I’ll always remember that asshat lying to Gumbels face (horribly) about the teams role in lying, fudging numbers, and all they did to fleece Miami Dade out of a cool billion for that atrocity they play on now.

Best baseball player I’ve ever seen.

And it’s not even close.

And if you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin.

Nobody has a shred of evidence of Bonds doing any steroids before 1999.

He had 411 home runs and 445 steals. The list of 400-400 players is, as follows:

Barry Bonds.

That's a generational talent. You continuing to dismiss that (and compare a career accomplishment not seen in baseball history to a statistical blip caused entirely by steroids) is a sign of some sort of mental deficiency. You do you, boo.

He has 1000 more walks than strikeouts.

A THOUSAND!
