If judges are involved, is it really a sport?

…except matches are decided by a subjective group of judges who decide what is and isn’t a landed punch. Boxing is far from perfect at best, and crookedly corrupt at worst.
uh, NO SHIT comment of the day.

I addressed the judging problem, and its up the fighters to not leave it up to the judges. However, boxings management is responsible for the lack of quality judges, the corruption, and shitty state its in, not the sport itself.

Thats better

yeah, but the pitcher is directly involved in attempting to prevent the batter from achieving his goal (hitting the ball), and vise versa.

if physical contact is required for it to be a sport, then basketball isn't a sport, either.
Different sports require differing amounts of physicality. I disagree with Peter- the hitter is using his physical ability to directly compete against the pitcher’s. It’s not a contact sport, but no one said it had to be. Auto racing requires no athletic ability, and thus is not a sport. Similarly, golf and bowling may use some (limited) athletic ability, but players aren’t directly competing- they only need to earn as high a score as possible, the same as any other day, versus any other opponent.

If there were no judges, and matches ended either as knockout or draw, then it’s fixed. I’m guessing this is one of the reasons MMA has succeeded at the expense of pro boxing.

It doesn't have to be combative contact, but if a defender is directly in front of you, actively trying to stop you, and trying to steal the ball, or block your shot, that is direct defense.

If your team mates could throw shit at the pitcher while he was winding up, that would be different. I get it, you like baseball, and you want it to be included in sports, but Its a game, with close associations to a sport, but its just not there.

I mean if you want to only call the pitching portion of the game sportish, I would allow it, but the entire thing is not a sport. 7 guys stand out in the filed doing absolutely nothing for 90% of the game. Most of the team is sitting in the dugout, through 97% of batting. Im sorry sir, you application has been denied.
tbh, i don't care about baseball. I like the Braves, that's it. I do think it takes a lot more athletic skill to hit a 95 mph fastball than to shoot a basketball.

Just seems like a lot of bias and subjectivity. I’m not saying the participants aren’t athletes, but I have a hard time calling them sports. To me a sport needs a sure fire way to determine a winner. Score more points than your opponent, get across the line first, etc

Even boxing and MMA should go until knockout or tap out

What sport doesn't have some sort of "judge?"

you are really clueless about Auto Racing. Just sayin'

Worst thing boxing ever did was make the rounds an even number.

Bitch, I said it had to be.

It's not worth explaining it. They made up their mind about something they're completely ignorant of, and nothing you can say will convince them otherwise. Just enjoy the racing.

Auto racing does require skill and some endurance. However, the addition of a motorize vehicle does take away from the human component of the hobby. Also, due to the high cost involved, and being a rich mans thing, it just cant be listed as a sport.

Oh? Explain the athleticism. They get into a car and turn left a buncha times. Brilliant!

I mean okay, but aside from the batter/pitcher exchange, thats it. Running bases is no more than a sprint.

Basketball is much more physically demanding overall, and requires you to match up against different players and positions as it goes. Knowing offensive and defensive sets, rotating properly, dribbling, passing, shooting, etc..

The car is doing the work. The driver can be some dumbass doughy redneck twerp, and frequently is.

I will give Cletus the benefit of the doubt with regards to there being a certain level of skill to maneuver the vehicle and track. But it is a rich mans hobby at best. You dont have to be a world class athlete to compete at a high level in racing. I have never seen a car driver compete in any other sport.

There's other forms of auto racing other than NASCAR, and even in NASCAR, 1/5 of the schedule is road courses, and there's a lot more that goes into oval racing than anyone realizes, which is why so many that come from a road racing background struggle in NASCAR. But the drivers have extreme reaction time and hand-eye coordination in a high pressure spot in 130+ degree temperatures inside the cab with g-forces more than space shuttle astronauts experience. Modern drivers are all in peak physical condition, hell, Mark Martin is over 60 and still rocking 8 pack abs.

But, you made up your mind and you're not interested in learning, I get it.

just had to throw it out there.
I dont engage in a debate about it unless I felt the person I was talking would reasonably listen.
Unless you get a race car & experience. It is hard to make people comprehend. Its just ignorance. So for most of them I dont even blame them for not knowing.
