VT /Fuente part ways

Saban ADs don't have a great track record either.

1. Jeremy Pruitt
2. Will Muschamp
3. Steve Sarkisian (yeah it is early but not looking good)
4. Derek Dooley
5. Butch Jones (struggling at Arkansas State)
6. Jim McElwain
7. Bo Pelini

The most successful ones have been Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, and Lane Kiffin.
Mario Cristobal was under Saban too.

Huh? Those were Athletic Directors (AD's)?

I think you miss my point in that Saban has success with them filling assistant roles at Alabama. Not when they've been retreaded.

When did Bo Pelini ever work for Saban anyway?

Looks like Pelini was under Les Miles, I thought he was a Saban guy.

Messed up on AD, probably because I was talking about ADs in an earlier topic.

My hope is that Trev Alberts see's how Saban has had consistent success at Alabama with these failed head coaches going back to coordinator, position, or analyst jobs, and requires Frost to do similar in filling the 4 offensive assistant positions.

So what if they get poached back to HC positions at a later date.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat, the same strategy as they do.

they still have to stay ahead of WSU. if they take their time they dont want to let WSU swoop in on their target.
If they lose one of their "Top Guys" they should pop the champagne.

If they are competing with Washington State for a coach then they should re-evaluate their entire commitment to the program.

Proving that being successful at the G5 level is a crapshoot when taking same coach to the P5 level.

Urbs was an anomaly. The pile of successful G5 coach carcasses that failed at the P5 level is deep.

Same can be said for P5 coordinators that make the jump to HC.

Saban has the ultimate strategy in snatching up those failed P5 head coaches in putting them back where they had original success at Alabama.

These many bluebloods that are having a hard time finding their way back to their glory days should be taking notes from the G.O.A.T.
Instead they're all about keeping their buddies employed.
The bolded has lost so many coaches their jobs it's ridiculous. Tuberville was a textbook example in that he would change his coordinators to appease people left and right but he wouldn't let his buddies go when they weren't cutting it. You have to have a reasonable amount of staff turnover to keep the program fresh in most situations.

bro get off the soap box Auburn literally got a less successful Boise coach than Washington got.

Sark is a Pete Carroll coaching tree person along with Kiffin. I'd argue Butch Jones doesn't count either because he didn't coach on the field for Saban.

If I were Frost, I'd go get Tom Herman for OC who's currently just an analyst at Chicago.

He had good numbers in 2014 at Ohio St when G5 Houston nabbed him.

You deserve points for that one!

Peterson was a great hire. Moorhead and Norvell are not good hires.

Harsin came out of left field but I trust our AD Greene and I've got no complaints so far.

I'd hire Kevin Steele for defense or at least get him as a consultant.

Nebraska didn't let anyone on defense go. All 4 fired were offense.

Their defense has shown progress since Chinander has been here, and has kept them in the vast majority of these games against ranked teams.

Offense and Special Teams has been their dumbfuckery.

Jimbo will go to LSU right after Gruden goes to Tennessee

I’d like that for NU as well.
from Bret Mac:
“Virginia Tech will pay Justin Fuente a $8.75 million buyout, negotiated down from $10 million”

News just keeps gettin better for the turkey necks.

Just needed more time IMO
They just had a big segment on this on sports talk radio. They took a brutal jab at Nebraska at the end. They listed all the schools who fired coaches, mentioned a few others who could follow suit, like Florida and ended it by saying, the only school who hasn't fired their coach but should is Nebraska, but i guess their fan base is used to 4 win seasons by now. I was driving while listening to it and i have no allegiance to Nebraska at all and it made me cringe.

If Frost's name were 'Mitch Cumstein' he'd be fired after the Iowa game (win or lose).

If I'm VT my list consist of:

1. Fickle - He maybe getting wrapped up by someone else though
2. Matt Campbell - He needs to make a move this year if he is going to do it
3. Mark Stoops - Not sure you could get him and no idea what his buyout is but he has proven himself
4. Billy Napier - I understand TT is high on him so I wouldn't sit around if this is your guy
5. Kendal Briles - Great OC, knows the ACC from his time at FSU and the kid can recruit and upgrade existing talent

The above 5 are solid and honestly, Briles might be too low on the list because what he has done at Arkansas with Franks and Jefferson has been just short of amazing. Someone get this kid out of the league.

The talk, though VT doesn't have many reliable message board insiders as some other programs out there, is the most realistic candidates are

Billy Napier
Jamey Chadwell
Charles Huff
Dave Clawson
Tony Elliott

A lot of insiders thought Elliott was the guy last year but for whatever reason (and none of them know why), our AD pussied out on firing Fuente at the last minute. There's been some smoke from national level writers indicating that Napier might have interest in the job and FWIW, Napier is coming to VA for a game vs Liberty this week so firing Fuente now clears the way for an open interview while he's in state. I'd love Napier but he's gonna have a ton of competition for him. If LSU strikes out on its bigger targets, for sure Napier would accept them in offered. And TCU can likely provide more money resource wise.

Fickle doesn't seem realistic and should have better options out there. No clue about Campbell. His name hasn't been mentioned much at all.

So, what went wrong at VT ??
Fuente seemed to be the perfect hire at the time, and was doing good things at Memphis.

To go along with what @amszete said, he was also fiercely loyal to OC Brad Cornelsen, who is his best friend and was in his wedding. Cornelsen absolutely suuuuuuuucks as an OC. It's beyond clear he is not a P5 capable coach. Jerry Kill, who was an adviser for us last year, even recommended moving on from him but Fuente wouldn't do it.
