I mean, not ideal, and the A's as a whole weren't good defensively, but that was a bunch of sub-par-to-bad fielders. -46 Rfield according to B-R.
The '05 Yankees were butchers. Jeter and Cano were at -50 Rfield on their own, Bernie Williams was -26 in CF, Sheffield was -14 in right.

Their base running was worse than their defense. Jeremy Giambi was safe at home though

BR seems to show Matt Stairs and Ben Grieve playing better defensively in 2000 than they did in the surrounding years (Stairs looks like he had a career year out there in the field). As someone who watched those two fire hydrants plod around I am skeptical that the difference was as significant as BR's metrics say. For instance, in 1999 Stairs was -25 and Grieve was -19.
I was not really suggesting them for all time worst overall, just mentioning the outfield specifically. Chavez was excellent and Tejada was fine at SS and those are two positions that really matter.

When I think of butchers up the middle Bannister and Orta are the gold standard. Looks like it was -53 runs for them in 1977

I bet that there were games that season where they basically started 5 DHs (Stairs, Grieve, Saenz at 3B and the Giambis at 1B and DH) and a left fielder in center (Long).
Looking at it... man, that is a sim-league style roster if I ever saw one
I’m happy with the bats we’ve brought in. Not so happy with nothing much being done for defense, starting pitching and bullpen.

Is there a bigger one year difference than the 1995-96 Red Sox? The '95 Red Sox were +79 rField and just a year later they were -77.

With the Austin Meadows trade there's now another outfield out there with the potential to be really bad defensively. Baddoo is probably going to be quite stretched as a full time CF and Meadows and Grossman are both guys that you'd probably prefer to DH.
