West Virginia travels nearly that far. But USC to Rutgers is definitely across the country.Those are some long plane rides for road games. Vice versa too I suppose.

This. While not ideal, the football travel for West Virginia in the Big 12 has been a lot less onerous than it has been for the other sports.Travel across country for Saturday football games would be easy enough. Get on a plane Friday and kick back; play your game and then come home Saturday evening. It's not like you're on a train for days. However, what kills the USC/Oregon rumor about going to the Big Ten is travel in other sports that would be on all days of the week. And a lot of those sports are stone losers financially before figuring in higher travel costs. Nope. Not gonna happen.
