This course is really hard and Phil isn’t as fat as he was 14 years ago. Should be interesting to see what lies these guys will get from the rough without fans.

Interesting to hear the USGA stressing that they’re “just letting Winged Foot be Winged Foot”. They’re both very right and very wrong in saying that.

Just thinking...

On one hand, other than Oakmont there’s probably no other US Open course that is set up and plays as difficult as Winged Foot on a daily basis. There’s very little they need to do to get the property US Open ready from a normal day of play. The fairway corridors and widths are exactly the same as every day play.

That said, they absolutely do make some changes. The rough is always thick and lush, but it’s never this long on a daily basis. The greens always run 10+, but generally not 13. They’re also generally very firm but not rock hard. This isn’t *exactly* what the membership faces on a daily basis, and those differences make a world of difference in terms of difficulty.

Just look at the PGA Championship winning score at WFW vs the US Open winning scores. Different setup entirely.

I cant believe people enjoy listening to Brandel Chamblee.
