AP Poll is interesting ...

Oh shit, you guys have been bad for so long that I forgot to include you in the discussion.

Yeah, B1G dimwits, we have Texas, too (they're pricks, but we have to claim them)! So take that! Since 1998

I FORGOT Tennessee actually won something in this lifetime, that's how long it's been. Lol. That's the year we collapsed to Michigan State along with like a handful of other teams choking at some point as well and allowed Tennessee a free title against FSU with a 4th string QB

It was one of the Ewing Theory years:

The Ewing Theory is a sports theory that suggests that a star athlete who receives a lot of media attention but doesn't lead their team to success will improve their team when they leave:

Elements: The star athlete must receive a lot of media attention and fan interest, but their team never wins anything substantial with them. The athlete then leaves the team due to injury, trade, graduation, free agency, or retirement. Finally, the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season.

They won the year after Peyton Manning left.

And they just made it into the cut - I have always used 1998 because that was the first year of the BCS when games were decided on the field, not by polls. Kind of wish it started in 1999 so I could ignore those orange fuckers.

I think the fact there are 3 one loss teams in front of them is also important. I've said before ... if they win they are in. Lose close they are in. Get destroyed, I think they may be out.
Yeah but look at those 3 one loss teams - Ohio State, Texas, Penn State. It's not as if it's SMU, Washington State, and Boise State (who also have 1 loss). The name on the jersey matters to these voters still to an extent. I'd bet if Penn State was 10-0 with Indiana's schedule, they'd be 2nd in the rankings.

FWIW, the loss to Michigan State was to a Saban team that was starting to figure things out and accumulate talent. I remember watching the end of that game after returning home from a Northwestern game that day.

Huh? That Michigan state team lost 2 more games after they beat us. To Purdue and they got destroyed by Penn State. Wouldn’t exactly call that “starting to figure things out”

I meant program wise. The nucleus of that talented but erratic 1998 Spartan team (6-6) matured and had a fantastic team next year in 1999 (10-2). FWIW, I saw the 1998 Buckeyes @ Northwestern and the 1999 Spartans @ Northwestern. Two incredible teams from that B1G Era!
