Bail System

See my first paragraph from that post. Enacting the death penalty is seen as “excessive”, “revenge” and “state-sponsored lynching” regardless of circumstances and awful the criminal in question is.

The criminal is expected to be taken care of by the state, by providing indefinite amounts of food, shelter, education, medical care and even entertainment / conjugal visits. Meanwhile, the victims, or their families, get nothing… except to join the rest of taxpaying citizens in paying for the criminals’ incarceration.

Bail provided a tiny way to hurt the criminal, by agreeing to behave for the short time leading up to trial / sentencing, or else risk having the state seize the property put up as collateral in bond. Now, it’s literally a revolving door to let criminals back on the street.

The only way I am opposed to the death penalty (and I'm not saying i am) is the chance of executing a innocent person. Is that rare? probably - is it ends justify the means..not sure

Obviously, i feel like tim Mcveigh - that Tsanrev brothers lived way longer then needed to. but that is another thread about how many appeals one should get on Death row.

With DNA evidence now readily available I doubt there are very many innocent people in prison.

Separate discussion for another day. Most people would justify the death penalty though, under either the most extreme of circumstances or if there was any undeniable evidence of guilt.

Whatever the sentence, it really doesn’t mean anything unless convicts actually serve hard time. The solution proposed by more leftist / socialist types is to somehow balance out inequality in society, usually by eliminating person property ownership. Even if that were a valid solution, implementation would take at least 2 generations by East German standards, and probably a lot longer to do it right. In the meantime, what are we going to do about the armed robbers, kid-touchers and drunk driving murderers?

The only reform I see is what I called out earlier, which is stop crowding jails with non-violent offenders. Legalize weed (more drugs if we want) or at worst make it a citation offense. Create a different system for drunk tanks and impound the drunks car until their sentencing is over. Use jails for those who need to be away from society and end bail. If you end up doing something that gets you in jail, then stay in jail.
Cannot agree more. That’s where the reform is in my mind. The bail system itself isn’t perfect, but I can’t see better.

Ive had enough of drug and drunk offenses getting jail to correct such behavior. It’s bullshit and it’s never worked. Citation offenses or straight impounding cars makes good sense.
