The grid is colorized....not the photo! But your mind fills in the gaps making it appear to be in color.
Your mind "tricks" your brain into seeing it as if it were a color photo, but it's not.
The effect is most notable when you see it from a distance. To verify the photo is not colorized simply stare at the grid up close and notice the background is different shades of black and white.
