They need a WR in the worst way. But would have to get creative to sign him, and that means adding years to a deal. Hopkins may be looking for either a swan-song deal or a make-good deal. The $3m cap space they have isn't enough to get him there on a prove it deal, and doubt they want to sign up for multiple years to be able to spread cap hit to future years. The $22m in dead money they are paying to WR's no longer on the team are killing them, so that's where "due diligence" comes in.
