Was listening to the Cover 3 Podcast and Bud Elliott thought so. I don't think it's too crazy. No other conference has as many marquee OOC matchups they do. It's honestly not even close.

They do have to win them though.

If Texas beats OSU, LSU beats Clemson, and OU beats Michigan, I'd say it's more probable than not at that point. They also have games against ND (x2), Clemson again, Miami, Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas, GT, and UL.

Texas vs. OSU is the big one. On the flip side if they lose a bunch of these OOC games they could be looking at just 3 again. Either way, I think we'll know where things stand after week 2. But I think they're the conference with the biggest variation of outcomes.

i've heard multiple media/youtube media podcasters... say that the CFP is going to hook up the SEC after what happened a year ago with SMU getting in

I think the first time that gets close to being a reality we will see conference scheduling rules change. Because of the size of the SEC it is possible to have 4-5 top teams that didn't have to play each other and get beat up in conference. But a reduction in OOC would fix that and prevent something like an all SEC or all B1G playoff, or even 2/3rds of the playoffs being one of those two.

i know the SEC will add a 9th conference game.. the money is too good to pass up (extra $55M-$60M)

I also think the conferences (BiG/SEC) will do a schedule alliance or agreement.. not just to play against each other but making sure that every school plays at least 1 OOC game vs another P4 school...

also that play in idea is going to come through... not sure what to really make of it other than Cable is going to PAY for it.

no because its still a 12 team playoff.
I think 5 maybe but 6 seems about 1 team too many.
4 SEC 4 Big 10 1 ACC 1 BigXII 1 G5. Likely ND with a realistic chance. the possible 2nd team from Big XII or ACC. if not one of these then the 5th SEC team

Like take Pate's top 20 from the other thread.
ND is in. he has Clemson Texas Penn State as his top 3. Arizona State is his top Big XII team. You have to have a G6. so we are at 6 right there with 1 SEC team and only 6 spots left. Alabama, LSU, Oregon, Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma are his next 6. Thats 5 SEC

Right now the SEC has a QB Talent issue so that combined with the fact that the conference likes to eat its own I'd be extremely surprised and even if it happened there won't be 6 teams worthy of going.

There are too many teams in the playoff it's stupid.

Rumor has it, OOC games will not be a part of the CFP formula starting in 2026. Teams will be selected by in-conference record only.

The goal in that is to not punish teams for scheduling difficult OOC opponents.

Basically exhibition games

Why would you play your stars in those games?

I imagine OOC goes away completely if they do that

I doubt it. The purpose of not including OOC games in the CFP formula is to promote tougher scheduling.

It's for the fans bragging rights and tv revenue.

Bragging rights

How much tv revenue is made on NFL preseason games? No one is going to care if a bunch of backups are seeing playing time.

What coach is going to risk their star QB for a meaningless game? MEANINGLESS! ZERO consequence to everyone’s goal of making the playoffs. Sounds lame and anyone paying a dime for these should be ashamed.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Do you actually think this years loser of the tejas/Ohio St game is gonna get punished by the CFP committee if they end up in the Top 3 or 4 of the SEC or Big 10?

I don’t think it matters if they get punished or not. Just as long as there is the illusion that it could happen. Completely removing that from the equation makes the game a lot less exciting (imo, maybe most people don’t feel that way)

Dude. The SEC and Big 10 are where they are (realignment wise) based on media revenue. We've got a thread based entirely on tv ratings.

Which brings more revenue to the SEC and Big 10...

tejas/San Jose St and Ohio St/Grambling combined

or

tejas/Ohio St all by itself

??

My argument is that by making OOC games MEANINGLESS, you won't be getting the same viewership numbers and as a consequence revenue for those games will decline.

I could be wrong, and the same number of people watch regardless of whether or not it has 'playoff implications' but I really doubt that.

And I've yet to hear a reason why coaches would play all their starters and risk injury? You could say to get the team ready for conference play. Fine. But how quickly will that change when an Arch Manning tears an ACL in a game that didn't matter to making the CFP?

Pre-season NFL games average 2 million viewers.

That's easily in the Top 10 of CFB viewership week-to-week. That's just 32 NFL teams compared to 134 FBS teams.

"Meaningless"

You don't care if Ohio St beats tejas on Aug 30th?

mmmkayy.

If both teams are not trying 100%? No I will not really care just as I don’t care if a team wins or loses a preseason game or a friendly

You keep dodging that question.
