What the hell. It is nearly the off season. Let's beat this horse again!

B1G Commish:P5 Auto Qualifier

Here are quotes that seem to sum up both camps.

Kevin Warren - B1G Commissioner
"It's just very important that we have the automatic qualifiers for the five conferences," Warren said on Friday. "It's just the demands of the schedule ... and I strongly believe that if you are crowned the Big Ten champion, that you should have an opportunity to participate for a national championship. ... I feel strongly about that as I stand here today."

Craig Thompson - MWC Commissioner
"I fought for two years in that room -- biased -- to get to the six and six, represented 60-some institutions, and so I'm not willing to just walk away and give that up," Thompson said. "And on the same note, what has qualified certain other conference champions to be guaranteed a spot that if they haven't accomplished it in six, seven years, why do they deserve that guaranteed access? Just because they won that league?"

Auto qualifiers is stupid. But then so is bloating out the playoffs to accommodate them.

so warren wants the P5 to have an automatic spot, and the MWC guy wants 6 spots (one to the G5).. but MWC guy doesn't want Conference champions to get automatic qualifiers? Just the top 6 ranked schools from each conference ..followed by the next 6 highest ranked teams?

I think they can negotiate on this..

Sankey is on record saying the opposite of Warren. He's on record saying the 12 team proposal or stay at 4...but not AQs. So it seems the P5 commissioners aren't "together" as much as their G5 counterparts.

If things go like they have in the past, the negotiations will take place when they find out how much money is on the table. That's the only thing that will bring them together....or not.

Did you know that the SEC now has an exit fee in it's bylaws? 30-45 million to leave now.. Wonder if Mizzu was feeling a bit froggy last summer?

I have zero problems with that in a larger playoff. To be honest their such a lack of cross conference games that it makes sense. Go to 12 teams and I think this is fine

I like the AQs. 6 with highest rated G5. I’d also like to see no more than 3 teams from any conference in a 12 team playoff.

Truth. And that ain't gonna change as long as schools are hell bent on having 7-8 home games every season. One other P5 OOC games per team don't cut it IMHO. In order to increase cross conference P5 games, schools have to be willing to settle for home and home series. Don't see that happening so you may be right.

And as for the old "their conference sucked...why should they get in". Who cares. They'll get their ass handed to them in the first round. Beats a meaningless bowl game.

Did your rusty cows and the dirt burglers cause this?

@Illustrious Potentate
Is that true??
I thought real conferences didn't charge anything to leave??

First I’ve heard of it, but seems to be true.

LOL @ loser conferences that charge less than 40 million to leave

If so, you can be sure ESPN had something to do with the change.

Their media rights deal depends on certain teams being locked in on it with hefty penalties for teams that could put revenue in jeopardy.

99% of the time, those proposals will yield the same teams. Playoff expansion shouldn’t get held up other this

Yeah, Utah and their two G5 losses really needed a playoff spot. Same with Pitt and their loss to Western Michigan.

I'm fine with autobids, but there needs to be some qualifiers for autobids to be in place.

I support the conference champ 'auto qualifiers' simply because 75% of a programs games are in-conference (9 of 12).

Consider that of those 3 OOC games, 2 are against sure cupcakes (FCS or G5) and maybe one against a competitive P5. It makes for difficulty in gauging a conferences overall strength.

Of course that doesn't apply to the SEC since only 66% of their regular season schedule is in-conference.

Look at the out of conference schedules after the current CFP expires, after 2025 everyone is playing at least 2 P5's OOC.
