Don't like it, but either this or something similar will happen soon. All big 3 sports have been or are expanding the playoffs for $. It dilutes the season, especially when the season is already 162 games.

With that said, when you are trying to grow the game, this makes sense. You want to have as many fanbases in the race as much as possible. With so much of the league tanking these days to rebuild or just not willing to spend, many teams go years without sniffing the playoff race. But just this year we saw the Mariners start to compete for that 2nd wild card spot and it was a great atmosphere each night there. This set up gives more opportunities to those fanbases.
