The new Apple TV+ streaming service is doing an upcoming TV series adaptation of Foundation, the classic space epic science fiction series by Isaac Asimov.

The leads were just announced by Variety:

- Lee Pace will be playing Brother Day, Emperor of the Galaxy. Pace had a previous role as a space tyrant as Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel.

- Jared Harris will play Hari Seldon, genius mathematician and psychohistorian. Harris is no stranger to playing scientists/geniuses, with similar roles in, for example, Chernobyl, Fringe, Resident Evil, and Sherlock Holmes.

Teaser! Looks monumental  :drum:

The new teaser 2, which also gives the release date as Friday, September 24, 2021!

Will check out.

I would prefer that they would start with the I, Robot stories (maybe a short season or a couple movies?) then do the Empire books for a season or two first, THEN tackle the Foundation story.

My guess is they will bury these stories into dialogue scenes or flashback episodes.

It’s good so far. I never read the books, so have no clue where it is going. Doing one episode per night, I finished #2 last night.

Glad to find something right up my alley that I haven’t already read, so no expectations or potential heartbreak if I find they destroyed it.

I like the show so far, but it could be scripted a bit better. It's hard to follow, and I'd like to understand what happened to the characters when we move past their timeline.

Of note, I had only read part of this story, and it was a long time ago. I don't remember much.

I read the entire franchise (I, Robot, Empire and Foundation books/stories) close to 30 years ago. I only remember the vague direction and the concept of psychohistory. So the show should be fresh enough for me not to get too upset with liberties that it takes.

As for when I watch it, I plan to wait until the season completes then I will binge it in a weekend or so. I am doing this with Ted Lasso S2 as well. I am looking forward to watching it this weekend…

Ted lasso is a good one too, but I lost interest when he broke down in S2.

I've read all the books, too, from Pebble in the Sky to Foundation and Earth. Of course, some of them were now written more than 60 years ago, and the stuff in them might be a little dated. So I anticipate a lot of "freshening up" of the technology and some story lines.

I've waited a long time for this, and it's too bad it's on apple

I read the books ages ago as well, and I was curious how this would turn out...though I expected it to be a bit painful on AppleTV....

That said, 3 episodes in, it seems pretty obvious they are using the work of Asimov as a rough basis for a series, and not being true to it. The scenery is pretty, but the characters are pretty bland, and the story line vague and frankly not very compelling.

Hari Seldon predicted this.

Well that's a bit disappointing, but not unexpected

After the last episode, the storyline is making more sense to me. Hoping this sets us up for a good storyline now. But I understand the full story is like 1000 years. I wonder if it will jump season to season with a new cast.

If I remember correctly, it spans MUCH longer than that.

The I Robot stories are set in the late 20th to early 22nd centuries, I think.

By the time the Empire books start, Earth is almost completely forgotten about, so that has to be multiple millennia, I would think. (Or was this the beginning of the Foundation books?)

Then the development of Psycho History takes about 1000 years, I think…

I watched two episodes and it’s not that great and lost interest. I wouldn’t sweat it.
