I always thought this was the biggest factor for a lot of guys, that, and families not wanting their kids getting too far away.

Is there a number that tells us how far away the average Football Scholarship player is from home ?? Division I or maybe Top 25 All time or something.

And does the miles decrease the further down the list of schools you go ??

Just wondering

This is a good question, ESPECIALLY when you consider the kids from Hawai'i.

Tua has to be one of the furthest from home to school, until his brother transferred from Alabama to Maryland. But with that being said, their family moved states side in Alabama at one point while the boys were playing.

I'm not sure where they are now.

Does Blake Barnett win the award for to TOTAL amount of miles?

From Cali and had stints at Alabama, ASU, and USF.

Excuse me, sir. Barnett actually played for the West Florida heifers.

Damn. I meant USF Bulls, but wrote UCF.

Please accept my deepest apologies. I'll correct it now.

IMO, distance is one of, if not, the biggest factor in recruiting, next to playing for a top program. It is also why you see all the top coaches going to talent rich states to coach.

You don't have to sell the school to the kid, they grew up watching, cheering, attending games, dreaming of playing for that school. Their family can come watch the games, their friends can come watch them play, etc.

Of course you are going to have kids who want to spread their wings and leave, but the advantage of hometown talent is huge.

I don't know -- Michigan had a punter from Australia -- that's like 10,000 miles away. We also have a defensive end from France and a defensive tackle from Germany -- those are like 4,000 miles away.

I think you might have to toss those out

Yeah - I was thinking all within America, but when you include internationals, they will certainly take the cake.

i dont think distance is as big of a factor as it used to be. back when family hop in a car and go watch because it was easier that way and likely the only way to see them play

It may not be as big as it used to be, as everyone is on tv now, but it is still one of the biggest factors. Alot of parents want their kids close, want to go to their games, kid want their friends to be able to go to their games, etc.

Is it a factor for every recruit? Absolutely not. But for the talent rich states, it gives them an enormous advantage in recruiting.

I will say this, when I was looking at the rosters of Alabama and Georgia, although they had a lot of out of state prospects, they still had about an equal number of in-state as out of state. That seems true for a lot of team.

However, the higher recruits (especially skill positions) tend to be pretty spread out.

i feel like the most telling maybe about 3* recruits.
5* talent is going to travel anywhere to play
4* is highly likely to travel anywhere to play
3* make up the majority i believe and would be the most spread out

wonder how many of those players end up transferring back to a local school?
