Sorry for your loss. Losing any pet is never easy.

When I was a kid I dug up a dead cat my grandma had buried in her yard. She let me think they were dinosaur bones. I taped them to an empty styrofoam plate, and marked each bone then took it to school where my teacher humiliated me in front of everybody by sending me to the office. Had to have a sit-down w my parents and principle about why I was bringing dead cat bones to school.
Now we know why you didn't become a paleontologist :dhd:

@Cobrabit sorry about your cat, that is a tough way to ring in the new year.

Well that just sucks. They really do become part of the family. Sorry for your and your families loss.

Thank you all for your condolences. The wife and kiddos are doing as well as can be expected, but they've also had plenty of exposure to grief over the last several years, unfortunately.

I'm personally dragging with about 3 hours of sleep from staying up with my son until 12:30 and I eventually fell asleep an hour later. With our other cat meowing loudly around 4:30, I got up a couple hours earlier than I planned to spend time with him and let everyone else sleep in as much as they could before leaving for church a little after 10. Peanut has been doing okay so far, but I'll see him searching for Buttercup every now and then, even though he 'knows'. While it's definitely difficult for the humans, Peanut just lost his adoptive sister.

We got them from the SPCA where she was about a 2 month old stray that was added to Peanut's family litter (he was a month older). They've essentially grown up together, along with my kids, for the last 1.5+ years. So we'll monitor his behavior over the next several weeks, but don't think we'll try to find another cat in the near future, as we're not sure how he'll react.

I'm currently finishing up my bottle of bourbon, since my resolutions don't start until tomorrow, and getting the kiddos packed for school tomorrow before I crash later tonight. I actually plan to wake up at 4:30 tomorrow to get in some cardio before taking my kiddos to school so my wife can save a half hour or more before she has to be at the high school. I've got another week before my students return, so I'll try to get used to my 30 minute earlier schedule and get a morning cardio workout in before I typically leave around 6 for my hour commute for my classes.

I greatly appreciate the response from the community to my family's loss and the opportunity to express my random thoughts in a hopefully coherent form.

Yeah, a bloody cat ruins the mood.

Had a great night of fun activities and playing games with the kiddos to ring in the new year, only to have to let them know one of our cats died at some point between 2 am when I went to sleep and 7 am when I woke up. Only saw our other cat while drinking my coffee and it wasn't until 10 am when everyone woke up that we wondered where Buttercup was at, as I just assumed she was sleeping in one of the kid's rooms.

After a few minutes of searching, I noticed a few pools of blood behind the TV stand and told the kids to go back upstairs with our other cat, Peanut, until we found Buttercup. She was in the corner behind the stand and rigor had already set in. From what I can tell, she either ate something foreign that perforated her upper digestive track (my thoughts) or had a fall with internal bleeding.

I spent the next 15 minutes cleaning up the blood and removing her body while my wife was sitting on the couch crying. I called the kids downstairs afterwards and broke the news. After around 5 minutes of crying my son asked if he could see her, so I spent a little time cleaning up the blood from the body and positioning her in a box so it wouldn't show. They were able to give her one last pet and Peanut was also able to say goodbye.

My wife found something online about taking paw print molds, so I did that right before I dug a hole at the corner of our property and placed her down, again to hide any additional blood seeping out of her mouth since the kids wanted to see her buried.

So now it's going to be a day of intermittent crying and grieving while also trying to keep their spirits up. Currently having a silly string battle in the yard.

RIP Buttercup

dang boss, sorry to hear that. Sad enough when we lose a pet, but an awful way like that makes it worse. Sorry.
