My first thought was “737....MAX??”

So....at least it wasn’t one of those.
I agree with you on not flying there. They rely so much on cheap flights to get around those islands. They buy cheaper, older planes often, and then they are allowed to maintain them just as cheaply. Not a good recipe.

I was going to mention that pilots in that part of the world don't have the extensive training that American (and many Euro countries) pilots do then I read that the plane dropped 10,000+- feet in less than a minute and now I would lean towards a catastrophic failure of the air frame. Like a wing or tail falling off or the fuselage disintegrating.

Man, what a way to go

Yeah the flight radar showing a drop that fast means it was either an intentional act (highly unlikely) or catastrophic failure. With a plane that old I'm going to assume some part of the flight controls failed and just pitched straight down.

26 years is not that old in aircraft terms if the air frame has been inspected and maintained routinely. Problem is that the small puddle jumper airlines in that part of the world don't have the money or the expertise to properly do that. 10,000 foot descent in 60 seconds or less suggests that it fell out of the sky like a rock would, as in no glide ratio at all. I suspect that the craft was in more than one piece before it hit the ocean.

26 years means a lot of cycles. not a lot for an American carrier but Indonesia doesn't have as stringent safety checks and protocols. Easily could have been a jackshaft issue or a metal fatigue issue.

Agree on this. It could be something intentional, but that’s doubtful considering the age of plane and part of the world with lax maintenance protocols.

This make and model, of this age and surely spotty maintenance, the drastic drop of 10k feet recorded....that was just what I thought too. Jackscrew. Rudder control.

That was an age flaw on this model discovered back in the 90s. I think there was a US Air crash in Pittsburgh that really highlighted this.

Yes, that's where the routine inspection and maintenance comes in. Could be the wing spar broke in half, could be the entire tail section broke off, could have been an explosion that sent the plane plummeting into the sea in many pieces although if the debris is in a fairly tight area it would discount much of the above.

Hopefully the locals ask for our assistance because I doubt that they have the experts or the facilities to accurately process and investigate this tragedy.

I'll be watching in about a year.
They'll explain it.

I’ve always loved these shows. I always found myself doing like a Law and Order episode....try to guess the culprit up front.

Sometimes it was as easy as a Law and Order episode (just watch the opening credits for “special guest star”). Other times it was much harder.

Likely a terrorist act. One year anniversary of Ukraine flight shot down.

So what's happening

Jakarta
Isn't that like close to Krakatoa, east of Java
or some shit

Oh yeah. I remember the British Airways 747 that went through an ash plume from Krakatoa and lost all engines for a bit. Wicked story.
