This isn't on Iowa
The tickets were purchased at a discount rate under the guise of then being for an Illinois chapter of the Boys&Girls club
When Iowa reached out to that club they were informed no one there had bought tickets
Iowa then found out that the Illinois student section known as "The Orange Crush" had bought the tickets for personal use using the B&G club discount
Iowa canceled the order, refunded the money and has given away this tickets for free to an actual Boys & Girls club
Moral of the story? Don't pretend to be someone you aren't to get a discount and then complain when you get caught
Im quite sure the Orange Krush can go ahead abd by tickets at full price and attend the game

It's a three-card-monty situation it sounds like. The tickets weren't going to the B&G club, but the donations raised by the kids that were going to the Iowa game as part of this promotion was. So it was technically to benefit the B&G club, perhaps. But if called I doubt they (B&G club) would know anything about the tickets, just the donation.

The person who ordered the tickets has already admitted to falsely using the B& g club to receive the discount rateHope more comes out about this, seems like a good old fashioned he-said-she-said. If the tickets were ordered as part of a 501(c)3 then is it just a claim that it was Boys Club?
Fuck Iowa.
Best guess is this is SoP for the Orange Krush and they're salty the gravy train is over
Otherwise they'd just order tickets at full price like everyone else and attend the game

So if I run a fundraiser and the top seller gets tickets to the superbowl, and the proceeds from the fundraiser goes to the B&G club, and the Super Bowl then calls the B&G club that knows nothing about the tickets...is it still fraud? Is the promotion not for the B&G club, since that is who benefits financially?
Seems like Iowa playing with fire on this one. If I'm Orange Krush I call up the B&G club (if there even really is one) that was going to get the donations and tell them there won't be any future donations. Let it go to the media, if that is where Iowa wants it to play out.

If there's no benefit to ordering the tickets under the B&G name then there's no reason to use it as the ordering end though. Ultimately Iowa already made good on their end by donating the tickets
I get your point but I've been to 10 Illinois Is gamrs in IC and the OK is always there so they've never been prevented from buying tickets

But the reason is the discount, and it is to benefit the B&G.
It's all stupid, it's all questionable, Krush certainly aren't innocent in this and Iowa isn't in the wrong. The optics are dangerous though.

I think the optics are really only bad if Iowa hadnt made good on the tickets to an actual B&G club but you're right in that if someone doesn't know they did that then it could look bad

Two days after saying Iowa officials had canceled 200 tickets it had purchased for Saturday's matchup between Iowa and Illinois in Iowa City because the school was "fearful," an Illinois fan group admitted that it had lied to get the tickets at a discount.
After the Orange Krush posted a statement Wednesday that accused Iowa officials of rescinding 200 tickets for Saturday's game because it "refused to face the consequences" of the sale, a statement from the school said the group had purchased the tickets at a discount by falsely claiming it had bought them for a local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club.
On Friday, the Illinois fan group apologized and admitted that it had lied to get the tickets, verifying the school's account of the purchase and subsequent decision to cancel the tickets.
"In planning the Orange Krush road trip, we misrepresented ourselves as another active charitable organization, which exercised poor judgment," the group's statement said. "This was our mistake and for that we are truly sorry. We also should have never placed blame on the Iowa ticket office and [athletic director Gary Barta] or called them out for canceling the tickets. Protection of their home court is, and should be, their priority."
