I honestly never thought I'd see the day when the Auburn and Alabama game would be a battle between two number one teams in the country. Auburn is #1 in the AP and Alabama is #1 in the Coaches Poll.
The state of Alabama at this moment is the premier college basketball state in the country and that blows my mind. If you had told me this would be the case a couple of years ago I would have laughed in your face.
That being said round one of Iron Bowl is to be played this Saturday in Tuscaloosa and the tea leaves favor the Tide.
- Auburn has had two lack-luster performances in a row and look tired on the court
- Auburn has gotten cold shooting from the 3 point line
- Alabama has a turnover issue but is shooting lights out from 3
- Game is in Tuscaloosa
To win Auburn needs to do the following:
- Play lock down perimeter defense and make Alabama take you on in the paint
- Don't let Sear's breath
- Shoot close to 50% from the 3 point line
- Baker Mazara is going to have to get going again as he is fading down the stretch
- Cardwell and Johnson need to stay out of foul trouble
To win Alabama needs to do the following:
- Protect the basketball and limit turnovers
- Force Broome to go right and deny him the left
- Harass the guards on the perimeter and don't give them open shots
- Keep Auburn out of the bonus
- Keep the tempo up and score on transitions
I think both teams feel the pressure on this one and the effort on defense is going to be through the roof with nerves affecting everyone so I don't expect either team to get out of the 80s in points and wouldn't be surprised if both teams are in the 70s.
Prediction:
Alabama - 87
