A team that was once good and competing for titles but now can't do jack and is an obscure program that loses 14 straight to its former rivals and struggles to make bowls?

Tennessee is a poor man's Texas

Right now, we don't deserve to be compared to Texas. We are more like Miami or Nebraska. We were great in the 1990s but haven't done anything in 20 years.

Even in the 1990s, we choked. They couldn't win a title with Peyton Manning. We should have likely had 2 or 3 National Titles.

Scott Frost says hi.

? Are you referencing the 1997 game? Even if we had won that one, we still wouldn't have won the title. (We would have just given Michigan a sole instead of split championship). It was the choke against Florida that cost us.

Tennessee over matched today. Not enough heart and determination. Poor showing.

Think comparing yourself to Minnesota is setting the bar a little high.

I thought he was 0-4 against Florida

Since Dec. 31,2004, Minnesota has as many wins against BOTH Alabama (1) and Auburn (1) as Tennessee does against BOTH Alabama (1) and Auburn (1). So, maybe, it is an apt comparison?

Its amazing how Tennessee, Texass, and Nebraska have never been able to get back. Although Thiefery will tell you their back baby.

I was surprised to see that the Gophers have a better winning percentage since 2010. And the Gophers have had the better best season with last year finishing ranked 10th last year, while Tennessee hasn't finished in the top 20 since then.

I don't know enough historically about those late 90's early 2000's teams in terms of where they were getting the majority of their recruits. LSU being a power since 2003 probably hasn't helped. Tennessee was an nfl factory back in those days. It doesn't seem like they are getting those types of guys now, or simply can't develop them. It sucks because Tenn/UF growing up was one of my favorite games to watch.

Exactly. He couldn't beat Florida and that is why he never won a National Championship. A better coach would have been able to find a game scheme to beat Spurrier. (Or frankly, if Tennessee had Spurrier and Manning, we would have rocked).

It is more about development. We had had top 25 classes every year in that span with the exception of the Dooley years. There always seems to be 4 stars and 5 stars on the roster but they never play that way.

Funny, we still have great players in the NFL (like Alvin Kamara right now).

Manning got a bad rap for that stat (0-4) vs. Florida - since UF was such a dominant team in that time period, and Spurrier from 1993-6 is only the second HC in SEC history to win 4 straight Championships. Coach Bryant winning 5 in a row from 1971-5 is the other. Sometimes, the other team is just better.

Manning had plenty of big wins - including 3-1 vs. Alabama and beating Ohio State in a Top 5 match-up in the 1996 Citrus Bowl to finish 12-1 and #3 that season, beating B1G Co-Champion Northwestern in the 1997 Citrus Bowl, beating Pac-10 Co-Champion @ UCLA to open the 1997 Regular Season and leading the Vols to the 1997 SEC Championship Game (I was there). He won plenty of BIG games in his UT career.

Just pointing out that even as a non-Tennessee fan, I respect the hell out of what Peyton Manning did in his 4 years at Tennessee, and that one stat against Florida does not tell the whole story. He was a GREAT QB on GREAT teams!

I know it has been a rough day. There will be better days again @ Tennessee. Cheers.
