he's done a decent job calling NBA playoff games this year, so maybe should stick with the NBA. b/c this take is awful:

He is not wrong
he's not wrong if you think mid-majors taking underachieving 4*'s from high majors while simultaneously losing their best proven players to the portal is a net positive.

again, Bilas is completely lost in the current era of college basketball.

Yes so its a wash. Mids are essentially gaining the same player they are losing

losing between two to four good mid-major players to the portal and picking up bad high major players is absolutely not a wash.

So a player that was proficient enough to play for or be on the roster for a major is not an asset for a mid? That same player is going to be considered good pickup if they sign with a mid.

Your logic is skewed

you appear to think that anyone that has ever earned a scholarship at a high major would be a net positive to a mid-major

that is retarded.

Calling that "retarded"? How ignorant and lazy are you

So how do you think that kid recruited to play at Kansas got there? The lottery?

lmao. even great programs can fuck up a player evaluation. i'm still waiting for Josh Selby to be better than Kyrie Irving.

and the Kansas example is retarded, because their players transfer out to other high-majors.

again, if you think the current system benefits mid-majors then you are hopefully and not worthy of serious conversation.

Come on. It's definitely not a wash that New Mexico lost JT Toppin to Texas Tech last year, and Donovan Dent to UCLA and picked up Kevin Patton Jr and JT Rock. If you even know who they are I'll be impressed. Out of the top 200 transfers according to 247, 9 of them are going to a mid major school.

yeah, i'm a fan of two mid majors. when we lose our best players to high majors, we don't replace them with former 4*/5* guys that were stuck on a loaded roster. we replace them with players from poorer mid-majors. which again, hurts mid-majors as a whole.

i'm not shocked that a retarded Michigan fan on hooplanation is arguing to the contrary, but Jay Bilas is being a tad shameless here.

All of you are awful, just fucking awful

Mid majors might “put all their eggs in one basket” and get a single elite player. But they’ll run out of money and won’t be able to assemble a big payroll team like the big money teams can and do.

That said, it might be worth it for a mid to give such strategy a shot.

IIRC didn't UNCC lose Williams to Nebraska and then Patterson I know came from UNCC. And Milicic to Tenn? Put those 3 guys on this years past team, and that's a fringe tournament team IMO. You just aren't getting comparable pieces to transfer down. It's a trickle down effect like you said. The best mid majors move up to P5, the low mid majors move up to G5ish schools. There will still be good mid major schools relative to other mid majors, but I think mid majors having success in the tournament are going to go down big time.

I posted this somewhere else. I think it's worth posting here.

This year there were only 4 mid major schools that received a #10 seed or better (not including Gonzaga). As a point of reference in 1998 there were ELEVEN! And take a look at some of these schools.

4 seed New Mexico
5 seed Princeton
7 seed UMass
8 seeds Charlotte & Rhode Island
9 seeds Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, George Washington & Murray State
10 seeds St. Louis & Detroit

There is basically a zero percent chance any of these schools ever reach this level, or schools of similar stature. The A10 had as many teams as the Big East, ACC, SEC and B1G. The WAC, yes the WAC, has 4 teams make it. CUSA and the Horizon each had 3. That's not coming back, and that part of it really sucks. There's basically no chance mid majors (not Gonzaga/St. Mary's) can achieve something better than a 9/10 seed ceiling. First all the good mid major players transfer up, second the P5 schools really have a monopoly on scheduling, and third, by the time these mid majors are comfortable playing as a team, the non conference portion of the schedule is over, and they have no opportunity for notable OOC wins.

The A10 was more of a legit league back then, before it got gang raped.

I blame realignment for the down state of NCAAM as much or more than NIL, but both have been bad.

Basically, the last thing anybody wants is a Grounghog Day repeat of this year over and over. With the SEC, or Big Ten just dominating. It diminishes the regular season, and then you might as well tune in on March 15th like everybody else. And then you have a tournament with zero compelling upsets.

I think the new PAC-12 will help a lot. Despite that conference being downright pitiful in some recent years, they were needed.

I also think if they can possibly push the transfer rule back to 2 years, that would change things a lot in the fans' favor.
