Brutal. They have played teams close but 1-5 record. Thank goodness for scheduling Lindenwood.

Do they reach 6 wins this year? Should Lance Leipold have taken a job last summer?

I’m beginning to think some of these coaches like Lance don’t want to take the middle to lower level teams in the P2. Even if the money is a lot better. I’m pretty sure he was offered some. I think Matt Campbell also was and he chose to stay at Iowa State.

It’s actually an interesting debate. A good coach (and those two are good coaches) given the resources can succeed at that middle/lower level in the P2. But are they ever getting over the top dogs in the SEC/B1G??? Most likely not.

But at the end of the day it’s gotta be better to be in one of those two conferences with many more of those resources and stability then being anywhere else. And I think eventually you’ll see one or both and coaches of the like choosing to do this.

It is interesting. I think it depends mostly on what a guy truly values. Some must think “I think I can live on $5 million/year. I don’t necessarily need another $2 million.” Others think “I like it here but that’s generational wealth type money. I’ll be glad I moved every payday.”

I also think it depends on how well a guy likes the cesspool that is recruiting. Some guys love getting down in that muck. Others think it stinks.

How many P2 jobs has Kyle Whittingham turned down?

The great thing about being the HC at Kansas is very low expectations. They are pleased as punch with .500

I think as these conference payout gaps start to increase exponentially while CFP spots start looking like a 2 conference invitational you’ll see values get tested. Someone like Kyle Willingham who is likely at the end of his coaching career won’t leave Utah imo. But someone that is young enough and has over a decade + still left in the tank to coach will likely jump. Matt Campbell is 44, he comes to mind.

Its been widely assumed that Campbell isn't long for Iowa St. But is simply waiting for the "right" job. If ND gets rid of Freeman I would not be surprised to see him go there

Ohh yeah, I think he is holding out for a good if not elite job in one of the SEC or B1G or ND. I once argued against him going to Michigan, but even I can admit I think he’d do good things there. He is a damn good coach.

He is. I just don't see him going to Michigan for some reason though?

When I argued it the year was like 2019 or 2020 (before Michigan went on that run). I didn’t think he’d jump then at it because it had been a while since UM had won anything and there may be better jobs out there. Today I could see him absolutely taking it and doing well.

Notre Dame and Michigan aren’t “middle to lower level “ P2. I was referring more to Miss St or Purdue type schools.

I wasn’t referring to them as middle lower. Thats why I referred to it as good/elite. I do think Campbell can/would hold out for a better than middle job. Although if things start happen that change his mind I could see a Jonathon Smith type move too.

Okay, but my original post on this was in reference to the Campbell types saying thanks but no thanks offers from the mid/lowers.

I think Lance would take it because he is older and has less time. I think Campbell is at a place now where he can afford to be patient. But if in a few years the gap is widening significantly (and it will) I think he would jump at one of those middle/low teams you referenced.

I’m pretty sure Lance was offered those type the last two years. But yeah, as time goes on that may change. The mid/lower P2s benefit from the revenue difference and can pay much more without crippling anything else.

He is a damn good coach but he is also a bit different. He may be the kind of guy that just stays where he is like Bill Snyder did.

While that's true, he is 60 now and given how this season has gone if something comes around I wouldn't be shocked if he took it.

Very well could be. But he is only 44. He has the benefit of time to wait for one of these big jobs to come up. He just needs to keep ISU relevant and he's done a helluva job of that.
