Has anybody seen this movie? I saw it initially in a movie theatre on the big screen when it first came out. A week before I saw it a buddy of mine saw it and said “you’ve gotta see this on the big screen… it’s amazing!” When I saw it audiences were cheering aloud at certain scenes. I’ve seen it a few times since then on TV. Each time I see it I’m drawn more to the Afghan guy who saved him and his family. IMO they were every bit of hero’s that Marcus Luttrell is.

Recently, with all the events going on in Afghanistan, I started watching clips of the movie again. I had heard over the years that Luttrell had the Afghan guy (Mohammed Golub) had a falling out but I never knew why. In addition to movie clips I started watching interviews of Luttrell. One in particular was his interview on Joe Rogan. The more interviews I watched the more something seemed “off”. I initially chalked it up to PTSD but there seemed to me something more.

I then became curious about what happened to the Afghan guy. It was there I learned that a lot of what Marcus was saying was either highly exaggerated or outright bullshit. I asked my friends if they had heard the movie was bullshit and they got legit pissed off at me.

Has anyone else heard his story/this movie aren’t legit?

Don't believe in anything that comes out of Hollywood.

on this one it may be more than Hollywood embellishment. I’m talking about Luttrell just outright making up stuff both in the book and the movie.

Folks embellish facts all the time for entertainment value.

I watched it in the theater and it was pretty intense. What those dudes went through running was brutal. I mean the scenes where they basically throw themselves down the rocky slope makes it hard not to feel every bump.

No idea how much was embellished but I’m standing my ground taking as many as I could before I throw myself off a cliff. 100% chance I die in that situation because I’d rather take a bullet than self inflict a brutal ass whipping by a rocky slope.

Felt bad for the guys in the helicopters.

see… I’m with you. The whole falling down the mountain thing is remarkable and memorable, right?

I don’t think any of that happened. Have you heard ANYTHING like this?

No but most of this stuff especially a group of seals getting their ass handed to them typically is buried if possible.

How many times in real life do the seals take the Shepard kid out? I’m thinking it’s pretty high and that’s the pivotal point that started the whole issue. If the kid dies they get out.

In Blackhawk Down (which is very close to the real story and backed up with documentaries and eye witness accounts) when the ranger steps out in that back alley kills the guy and his kid picks up his gun, I think 99% of the time the kid gets taken out. But comparing this to BHD and just noticing there aren’t other people supporting the story and docs on it then I would say chances are high a lot is embellished.

Didn't the helicopter full of SEALS really get all blow's up though?

The movie reads as a love affair to SEALS and was known to take substantial liberties with the truth, even when it was released. If you want to see a fairly accurate film portrayal of U.S. Special Forces exhibiting outstanding heroism in the face of overwhelming odds, "Black Hawk Down" is still the gold standard.

again, I think it may be more than just embellishing
The movie was very entertaining and if the facts were wrong I don't care. I don't go to movies looking for truth.

yes, unfortunately that was accurate. Tragic. It funny both you and @Wild Turkey brought up black hawk down that was the movie I was thinking of when I was looking into this one. I agree that BHD was pretty close to being 100% authentic. Lots of good men died that day bc of some very bad decisions. That was clearly depicted in the movie. In Lone survivor I think very good men also died but the movie didn’t blame it on “bad decisions”. It blamed it on a massive Taliban force that IMO didn’t exist.

for me, when someone puts out there that “this movie is true” AND it involves the military I’m looking to hold them to that. Those types of movies aren’t just “entertainment” for me. Just my opinion.

I have not seen the movie. But now I’ve got something to deep dive into this evening.

Saving Private Ryan was littered with falsehoods but it was still a great movie.

it never claimed to be a true story. It was based upon SOME true events. Luttrell made lots of money selling a story that doesn’t appear to be true

Like I said before I only go to movies to be entertained.

That is a distinction some people miss that has always aggravated. If you tell me it’s based on a true story I can accept falsehoods. When it says this IS a true story the same principle doesn’t apply.

Did they say this WAS a true story, or based on one?

They usually say based on a true story.

you really should watch the movie before doing a deep dive.

Let me start a discussion about what I’ve found with what I believe to be the most convincing and damning piece of evidence that the story is NOT true.

A big part of the movie involves a gun battle these 4 seals had with the Taliban. It takes up a significant portion of the movie and has some of the most memorable scenes. ( @Wild Turkey has already alluded to them).

According to Luttrell, these 4 navy seals fought off anywhere between 100-200 Taliban (depending on which version of the story he is telling). He said the gun battle lasted 2-3 hours. A video surfaced a few years ago in which the Taliban actually videotaped the whole thing. There was a graphic version but it has since been scrubbed from the internet. There is a non- graphic version which depicts a gun battle lasting less than 30 minutes.

Here it is…

there’s more I can say about this but let’s start there. If Luttrell lied (greatly exaggerated this gun battle) then it calls into question the rest of his story.
