Movie Lone Survivor (2013)

It’s a bullshit story.

I believe the man who saved Luttrell, Mohamed Gulab, more than Marcus Luttrell.

One is a multimillionaire, the other had his life destroyed and lives in a tiny apartment outside Dallas.

But both are going to out live that war. So good for both of them.

I believe the Afghan guy more as well also. If for no other reason Luttrell has ptsd. I don’t believe ptsd alone accounts for the discrepancies. Luttrell made a fortune off the book, the movie and off his motivational speeches he gives. He’s got lots of reasons to lie. The Afghan guy has already demonstrated what his character is all about. I’m not gonna question it without proof that he’s lying

Weird that I never got a notification that I was tagged, but yet I found myself clicking this thread.

I watched this movie once on TV or streaming and remember it as a great entertaining story, regardless if it was fact or fiction. Like many movies in this category, you're never going to get only fact, but a LOT of embellishment to make it an entertaining movie that is less than 2 hours of run time. Same with American Sniper and others that were based on snippets of true stories.

Think of these types of movies as impressionist paintings. They're there to make you feel "something" that is loosely based on a real thing. It is not a photograph/documentary.

I appreciate the insight but they are holding themselves out as accurate (especially on the main details”). If they are gonna say that they need to be accurate. Black hawk down is the example we are talking about. That movie was very accurate.

Look, in the movie Marcus is seen cheering as the helicopter is shot down. IRL he said “I never even saw the helicopter”. That’s an insignificant detail. It’s ok that they dressed that up. But saying you are in a 2-3 hour firefight with over 100 enemy combatants, where you killed over 50 of them and fell down the side of a mountain a few times… and none of THAT is true? IMO that’s a different story.

as always, I appreciate your thoughtful insight. I too think this guy had ptsd BAD. Watch him on the Rogan podcast. You can see him actually relieving stuff (real or not) and the ptsd kicking in.

Check out this Newsweek article. It gives lots of details about Luttrell and Gulob. For me, it gives a nice accounting of the “other side of the coin”

I could not find the unedited version. I’d be very interested to see it. I read somewhere that they were yelling for Marcus. Can you please PM me the link?
I’ll see if I can pull the link and send it shortly. Out of wifi right now and can’t get to YouTube. If you see this sooner….it’s in the description of the video you linked here. Second link from bottom.

I’m with @Blackshirts BLVD on the PTSD. That’s what happens in a situation like this. I know they are Seals. They are trained for the most grueling things. But, you can’t really cant prepare the mind for processing an ambush in unfamiliar, brutal territory where your pinned and outnumbered.

We live in a time where so many embellish and flat out lie for attention and impact. And I sometimes relish calling a person out on their obvious bullshit. I just don’t think this was obvious bullshit.

Admittedly there is a fine line between what publishers, producers and handlers push for to sell a story and what is hazy recollection through his own trauma. This has been a debate at least since Audie Murphy.

@dbldwn711 …i remember now…the link for the uncensored version in the description of the censored link you sent goes to a Dropbox and I can’t link from it from my phone.

Oh note….I didn’t notice anything of the firefight that was uncensored. There was some post video of the bodies being looted. Fwiw.

There’s irony to this thread being a thing here now. I know the OP said it was recent Afghanistan events that prompted this. It’s just all the headlines today. Civilians literally falling off of planes taking off in Kabul trying to get away from the Taliban. What a fucking mess.

I agreed when we went in to take down Al Qaeda 20 years ago, and dispossess the dipshit Taliban while we were at it. I’m just shocked at the gall of our government to say now they are just so surprised the Taliban is taking back over so quickly.

The Brits learned about trying to take the country first. The Soviets didn’t listen and had their own similar experience. We had 20 years to try to help get something going in the right direction and couldn’t do anything but bail and head home too.

I think about people like Mohammed Golub right now. Not him specifically as he got clear….but there are so many people that backed us and supported us. And all of them are in utter jeopardy now. This was going to be a mess from the word go, but this still sticks out as damning that we couldn’t get some type of self sustaining security up over two decades to where they could at least hold on for half a year or more.

That place is now Talibanistan.

as to the story being bullshit. I'm sure when you're overwhelmed by automatic weapons fire and RPGs it probably feels like 100 people shooting at you when it could be 10-15. That dude can tell any story he wants... fucking day is probably going through his head constantly.

Very much this.

Lots of respect for Texas Frog.

Either that or huge pieces of the day and event are still a damn blur.

Im willing to give the benefit of the doubt here to that.

One thing that does stick into me sideways is the conflict with Golub. In the face of his saving from a solid custom like Pashtunwali (and an extremely dangerous moment for a Afghani to invoke it) and not embrace Golubs own story with some merit is wrong. It would have been very easy to amend the story with the explanation that trauma can effect recollection like this.

Again, not sure if all of this was out of Latrells power at that point and the messaging was just controlled by those that now had control of the story…but it was wrong.

First hand or eye witness accounts are rarely 100% accurate.

It's an entertaining movie, to be sure.
Whether it is factually true or not, I have no idea and don't really wish to know.
Given what they went through, if anyone represented in the movie is trying to profit from all of this, I say let 'em.

And thought I'm not sure why, it seems like Shooter is on 4x a day every day.......

I witnessed the Thumper meltdown and I can assure you everything said is 100% accurate and still doesn’t come close to painting the full picture.
