Basically, this would leave just one portal period from Dec 7th to Jan 9th. The logic being that the portal has become disruptive in regards to rosters because coaches don't know who is going to be leaving after spring practice.

Personally, I think this is fair because the biggest argument has always been if a coach can leave then why can't a player and no coach leaves after spring training so this basically sets an even playing field for the period that coaches typically leave and allows players to do the same.

I'm not a fan of this. Coaches might not leave after spring ball often, but they definitely leave often after January 9th. Players shouldn't be told "Well the season is over now and the coach who built the relationship that made you want to come here is gone. Maybe you can find a better program to play for two seasons from now."

If a coach leaves automatically opens a 30 day window in the portal for players, that doesn’t change.

The point is a coach can leave when he wants and a player can to during that window.

It’s fair.

Oh okay, that's my bad. I didn't realize that was still in place. Yeah this isn't a big deal then. Honestly, I was hoping we were gonna see a couple of our QBs enter the spring portal this year and they didn't. I guess if anything it'll keep certain guys off the field for another year when they could go somewhere else and possibly play sooner.

I thought a player had some kind of window that would allow them to enter the transfer portal or just transfer if the coach left or was canned. But my memory ain’t too swift.

Should have read further. My bad.

Agree. 1 portal period is all that is necessary. I'd also like to see them limit the number of times a player can enter the portal.

No more Bru McCoys.
With one window the max someone could transfer would 4 times (unless they got a medical waiver) but I doubt we will see more than 3 going forward. In the past you would see a guy transfer in the Winter and then again in the Spring so the number of transfers got ridiculous.

Honestly they should limit it to 2 times or they have to sit a year just to make these guys think hard about their decision.

We have two major issues that need to be solved the portal and NIL. I think this is a step in helping with the portal and if they went with the limit of 2 I think we could all live with that. Short of making the players employees I'm not sure how to fix that issue.

I just hate the dates for the December/January window.. puts schools AND PLAYERS, in the playoffs at a disadvantage, but I guess there isn't much they can do that with schools having a small window for athletes to enroll for the Spring semester in order to participate in Spring practices.

Think you'll see many players on teams in the playoffs in the portal? I feel like if that happens it's likely someone who isn't going to see the field regardless.

Why do you hate that kid that gets to play in the playoffs needs to commit to the team that gave him the opportunity?

If a prima donna wants to shop himself then he can man up and do it. Nothing is stopping him.

I was thinking this same thing. Didn't Caleb Downs transfer from playoff Alabama to the Buckeyes? Or I thought I heard that on a podcast.

Exactly. Any player who is an actual starter or even on the 2-deep isn't likely to up and leave if they have a national title to possibly play for.

Got ya. I was thinking that could be the other reason.

The genie's out already.

I think they should keep the portal how it is but make the “student athletes” pay a portal tax.

The guys way down the depth chart probably.

So this window will be after signing day, so current rostered players will know who is coming in. On the surface of this I don't see an issue with it. There are carve out for things like coaches leaving, but it should allow coaches to better plan their rosters.

To me the bigger news in that release is at the very end about the blanket waiver for burning a year of eligibility. The CCG and playoff games this year won't count against eligibility. I take it to mean a kid could sit out all year, play the final three games for a team, then the CCG, and all playoff games and still have the year considered a redshirt. Not sure any players will be key contributors to a playoff team, but with injuries you never know.

Sure, which aren't really going to pose much of a problem for coaches in the CFP. It's extremely unlikely that level of depth would be utilized in a game against another high-ranking team.
