The PAC-12 Might Be In Big Trouble After Big 12's New Media Deal

PAC-12 programs might earn substantially less than Big 12 teams in the coming years. Will teams leave after the Big 12's new media deal?

Jason Scheer reported PAC-12 ADs are being told Big 12 schools are expecting a total revenue payout of $55 million under the new deal. That number includes media revenue and any splits from March Madness and bowl games.

The PAC-12 is expected to tap out at no more than $45 million. That means Big 12 teams will be cashing in an extra $10 million annually.


If the above is true (which I have no reason to doubt at this point) then its a given that AZ, ASU and Utah will be looking to make the move and most likely Colorado as well. At that point, the PAC is done and Oregon and Washington will have to scramble to get into the B1G as well.

I don't hate the PAC.

In fact, I would rather the PAC had stayed all together and gotten the ship corrected but it's not going to happen and the B1G isn't going to pick up additional PAC Teams. That is just reality.
 
I thought it would be closer than that.
But really, isn't this about how most people thought it would play out.

That's what happens when you let a disaster like Larry Scott keep his job long after he showed himself to be incompetent.

Just off the top of my head Larry Scott...

De-emphasized football (the sport that pays for everything) in favor of Olympic sports.

Pissed off the conferences biggest, most well known brand

Botched the tv deal

Botched the PAC12 Network so bad, hardly anyone gets it...including PAC fans.

Put the conference offices in a ridiculously expensive building where the lease was at least double what any other conference was paying

Consistently botched scheduling so that many of the conferences best matchups were played at times or on networks where there were fewer viewers.

Messed up the PACCG by having it on Friday Nights

Never addressed the obvious problem with incompetent referees which has plagued the conference for years.

If someone was trying to design a blueprint for how to ruin a conference, it would be difficult to come up with a better one.

Gladly go to the B1G at this point. This conference is chumps when you get weeks of going up against CAL and Colorado. We are bigger than this. We are better than this. Give us what we deserve and that is weekly competition.
 
@osubuckeye89 you can laugh at his statement but the truth is Amazon prime is in more homes than Pac 12 network is. a lot of my friends who moved from the west coast said they cant get it. but prime is everywhere.

I know that. But acting like being on Prime is better or "just as good" (OD) as being on Fox or ESPN is laughable

Prime isnt going to be handing out a ton of money to get the PAC 12 since it appears no one else really wants it. There's not exactly a bidding war going on for those rights.

Incredible the thought of a company or companies not wanting to help shape their product to make it more desirable to get more consumers is shocking. Amazon gets the PAC on the cheap and spends effort and time to make it marketable and make it something others want to watch and are willing to pay to watch. It's business 101.

Amazon, which now has Thurdsay Night Football, is just beginning their entry into football. But it would probably be a good start to everytime someone logs into Amazon.com and they see ads for upcoming PAC games on the website, may be a start on how to start market your investment. Maybe your new suggestion purchases are PAC team gear.

Bottom line, Amazon buys it for cheap, invests into making it a product people want to pay to watch, and guess what? Amazon turns a cheap purchase into something big.

Yes people are going to be rushing to buy Stanford, Cal, Wazzu, Utah, Oregon State & Colorado gear because Amazon advertises it :pound: :facepalm:

Well let's see. The current top 25 rankings is...#8 Oregon, #9 USC, #10 UCLA, #11 Utah. Seems pretty easy to start marketing two of those top teams that will remain in the conference. Add in UW and the bay area and the Arizona schools and it's a product that can be marketed.

he should've let UT bring LHN with them.. Pac channel would have been picked up coast to coast

Maybe not a ton of money but they will have to pay above market value because nobody really wants to go to streaming.

The real question is 25M with FOX/ESPN or 35M with ESPN/Amazon

I'd take the money and move over to Amazon. Streaming is the future. There's some risk there but the PAC needs to take risks at this point.
