One of the best banjo pickers to ever do it. His band, The New South was a powerhouse in the bluegrass world. Doyle Lawson, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice and Keith Whitley all got their starts in JD's band. Got to see him several times in Maggie Valley, NC as a kid at Raymond Fairchild's Opry House. This video was from the same venue, but I wasn't there.

 
And Doyle Lawson is performing for the last time today. Retiring. Bluegrass is dying

There’s a lot of good talent. I was more or less referring to the bluegrass that I grew up with. Bluegrass is a much newer genre than people realize. JD and Doyle are really the second generation of the genre. Earl Scruggs was around for the beginning in Bill Monroe’s band

Bluegrass is alive and well in Central Illinois due to Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Are they still a thing? I know Alison Kraus just released another duet album with Robert Plant.

They had an album together several years ago too. They ain’t bad together. I wouldn’t call it bluegrass(or rock) though

I'm pretty sure that Chris Thile made a crossroads transaction at some point in his childhood. I think that the truly underrated one in that old group is Sean.

Old school bluegrass is some of my favorite music. Jimmy Martin is considered a god in my house

I watched that movie as a kid and liked it but I had no idea until I was older how good a job they did with the authenticity. Arlen Roth is the one to thank for that as I understand it.

I watched it the first time after it was out a few years on the advise of a musician friend when I worked in Indianapolis and starting hanging at the Slippery Noodle. I was seriously into electrified blues then.
