I suspect that I will be posting a bunch of SEC stuff this week as there will be a lot of interesting conversations and decisions. If you don't like it, fuck off.
The main things that will be discussed:
1. Format of schedule when OU and TX join in 2025 (3-6 or 1-7, and 8 or 9 IC games).
2. NIL / Transfer portal (along with some The Midget v. Dumbo).
3. SEC position on CFP expansion - go it alone if no agreement on a 12 teams CFP.
As for no. 1, I've read a few things recently that introduced the idea of 1-7 instead of 3-6. First I had heard of it and allows you to stay at 8 IC games. You get 1 annual rival ... UGA v. UF, AU v. UA, LSU v. TX , ATM v. OU, Arky v. MSU, UTjr v. Vandy, etc. Then you play 7 other teams, giving you 8 games. You rotate through the 7 other teams every other year. It's an interesting look and only makes sense if you want to stay at 8 IC games, which is why it is being discussed.
The 1-7/8 plan appeals to the lower level teams who need to have that extra OOC game to be bowl eligible. According to some writers, this means that it is favored by:
Vandy, UK, OM, MSU, Arky, Mizzou, USCjr and UTjr
UA, AU, UGA, UF, UT, OU, TAMU and LSU are considered the top teams and would prefer to play 9 games with a 3-6 format.
I can hear the UTjr fans already ... why are we considered bottom and UT and AU are considered top. Don't really care ... play better and make it not make sense.
The feeling is that the lower teams will go along with 3-6/9 and to appease them, they top teams will play tougher opponents. For example,
AU gets UF, UGA and Bama
UF gets UGA, AU and LSU
LSU gets Bama, UF and ATM
ATM gets UT, OU and LSU
OU gets UT, ATM and Arky
UGA gets AU, UF and UTjr (instead of USCjr)
UA gets AU, LSU and UTjr
UT gets OU, ATM, and Arky
In this case, AU, UF, LSU and ATM really get screwed.
The lower teams, for the most part get a break:
UTjr gets UGA, Bama and Vandy
Vandy gets OM, Ky and UTjr
Ky gets Vandy, Mizzou and Arky
Mizzou gets Ky, OM, and MSU
etc.
This really helps with the TV inventory and fan interest in that you have your top 8 teams playing each other each year instead of every other year, for the most part, and all the important rivalries are maintained and/or renewed.
In all the articles I read, the consensus is that that TV dollars and fan interest will win out and we will have a 3-6/9, with the tougher teams playing each other more often. I think at the end of the day it will be a hybrid where the top 9 teams, which includes UTjr will get 2 hard games and 1 easier game, for the most part. Something like:
UA - AU, LSU, UTjr
Arky - Mizzou, UT, ATM
AU - UA, UGA, Vandy (although UF would be better)
UF - UGA, USCjr, UTjr (although AU would be better than USCjr)
UGA - AU, UF, USCjr (although UTjr would be better for UGA, but not for USCjr that sees that as a rivalry ... we don't ... Clemson means much more)
UK - Mizzou, MSU, USCjr
LSU - UA, OM, ATM
Mizzou - Arky, UK, OU
MSU - AU, UK, OM
OM - Vandy, LSU, MSU
OU - UT, Mizzou, MSU
USCjr - UF, UGA, Vandy
UTjr - UA, UF, Vandy
UT - OU, ATM, Arky
ATM - Arky, LSU, UT
Vandy - UTjr, OM, AU
Way too easy for OU. The only way to work that out is to let UA play MSU instead of LSU, and give OU LSU. I hate losing UA v. LSU which has been one of the best rivalries for years.
