Small Rivalries that went away

I have noticed that there use to be intriguing OOC matchups that are not played anymore and I wonder why. Here is a listing of some of them (This doesn't include rivalries destroyed by realignment. We know about them)

Kentucky vs. Indiana - both programs are about the same level. It looked like a great series. I wonder why it died.

Missouri vs. Illinois- Again a fun border war that has died off

Vandy vs. Wake Forest - Again two evenly matched border state teams

Alabama vs. Southern Miss - I can understand why this one went away but I am curious as to how it became a thing. Alabama use to play Southern Miss every year in the 1990s and early 2000s

There are others that I am missing. Feel free to post.
 
I think Kentucky-Indiana still goes on occasionally in basketball (maybe every year?). Same thing with illinois - Mizzou.
 
Rice vs Texas A&M was good back in the day. Wouldn't be very competitive right now.

Southern Miss was independent at the time and the Miss schools wouldn't paly them so both Auburn and Alabama typically played them almost every year. When they got into a conference Southern Miss didn't want any part of it anymore plus their competitivness went downhill.

Auburn vs FSU was a thing for about 10 to 12 years.
 
Auburn vs GT still feels like a rivalry even though they never play anymore. Before GT joined the ACC it was every year.

I still remember the Wreck Tech parade and miss that tradition.
 
Nebraska used to have a few in the B12 that are all but gone. I'd love a Nebraska vs OU game scheduled in the future

6 wins was/is a pretty tall task for some of those meh programs in good conferences. Not sure it means AS much now as I would think (could be wrong) that the TV/media draw of one of those border or state v state rival games would be > some chicken bowl on Dec 20th but again, I could be wrong, haven’t looked into it.

I know personally a UK v IU or Mizzu v IL ect would be a much more desirable watch in say, early Sept. than mid\late Dec when both teams have been proven to be trash. It would mean more early and be better exposure for the schools imo.

Bowls aren't about money for the schools. It's about extra practice time, and recruiting

Those Bobby "The General" Knight led Indiana teams going into Rupp and playing Kentucky were some of the greatest college basketball games of all time. Pure, fundamental basketball!

I went to the Cincinnati-Kentucky tournament game a while back. It was great, and I'm sure Kentucky-Indiana would be even better
 
Georgia-UNC is an old rivalry from before my time.

Georgia-Clemson is one that should have never went away, it’s not completely back, but the two programs will be playing each other pretty frequently over the next 15 years

In the period that I described, they were in Conference USA. They had ranked teams some year (1999 for example). They were pretty competitive with Alabama in that period. It wouldn't make much sense today. I am just curious how it stated. Alabama played them continually for almost 15 straight seasons. Any Tide fans have any input?

Conference realignment killed that one.

One in the Pac12 that I think is still played often is UCLS vs. San Diego State.

They were typically played in the first 1-3 games. The exception was Vandy vs. Wake Forest. That series started when the UK vs. Tenn game was moved to the last full week of SEC football. However UT vs. Vandy is once again now played in the last full week of SEC football so that maybe the reason Vandy and Wake Forest don't play anymore.

Memphis and Tennessee used to play often. I was told that the football series was based on negotiation to keep basketball series (Memphis would not play TN in basketball unless TN played them in football)

an old aggie told me a story yesterday,
of when the aggie band used whistles
for their maneuvers,
and rice strategically placed some students
who blew their whistles just before the band directors did,
and crashed the aggie band -
i thought that was hilarious!
