It's been a LONG time since Michigan was being projected to finish ahead of, and beat, Ohio State in the pre-season
Date: Jan. 1, 2024
Projected matchup: No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 4 Ohio State
Let's run it back. Georgia and Ohio State played an instant classic in last year's semifinal, which turned out to be the Bulldogs' toughest game of the season. There's a good chance Kirby Smart's team will be riding a nation-leading 31-game winning streak heading into the playoff in their quest for a three-peat. If the Buckeyes grab the No. 4 again, that means a third straight loss to Michigan and considerable pressure on Ryan Day to win a big game in this spot.
Date: Jan. 1, 2024
Projected matchup: No. 2 Michigan vs. No. 3 USC
Unfinished business. It's a lazy narrative for the Trojans, but after USC squandered its opportunity to reach the playoff in Lincoln Riley's first season last fall, it won't miss that chance again. Reigning Heisman winner Caleb Williams returns to try and win another one, but USC's defense will have to hold up its end of the bargain. For Michigan, the Wolverines are vying for their third consecutive Big Ten Championship and playoff appearance under Jim Harbaugh.
Date: Jan. 8, 2024
Projected matchup: No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 2 Michigan
Finally, Michigan breaks its playoff drought and wins a semifinal game to get to the national championship. The Wolverines and Bulldogs played two years ago down in Miami, but Georgia made quick work of the Big Ten champs. This time around, expect a gritty effort from both teams — potential unbeaten teams, we might add — as the 2023 college football season is decided prior to expansion. Georgia's modern-day dynasty continues.
