Newly-signed Texas NIL bill could set standard moving forward

The bill was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott and will be enforced starting July 1.

I was surprised this wasn't a topic yet and figured someone would start it. The gest is in the article but other things outside the article are being reported on the radio.

Basically, the Texas schools want to give incentives like points to people who contribute to the NIL collectives and the new Texas bill allows that but the NCAA doesn't. There is also some back and forth about the collectives paying the athletes and the NCAA saying that is not allowed.

Right now the schools are posturing to say they will follow state law and do not have to follow NCAA direction.

We are getting close to a nuclear situation with NIL and the NCAA it appears.
 
BTW I might not have all the facts correct because what I'm hearing on the radio is not being collaborated with what I am reading at this time so I'm sure some of you have better info.

yeah.. I donate to the Texas OneFund.. not sure I qualify for points.. ($50/month tier)

Love it though, if it gives more incentives for fans to donate, do it :)

BTW State>>>NCAA

NCAA will cry to the Feds to intervene.. Saban/Smart/BK will gladly support that lol

I am not going to give a dime to any NIL fund. There are kids that don’t have enough to eat that need funding and I can’t justify donating money to over privileged athletes.

I just can’t do it.

I do it to raise the floor for every scholarship athlete..not just the football program but across all sports. I totally understand where you are coming from though.

Honestly what I hear is attorneys think the NCAA play here is to let this ride and eventually the schools will have to come up with some type of employment agreement with the athletes in order to control the situation.

1. The NCAA isn't going to win any kind of lawsuit as they always get their ass handed to them
2. The only way to put any kind of cap on NIL is to go to employment contracts
3. There is something about employment contracts that will help with "trust" lawsuits but I was in the car and didn't hear it all and didn't follow what they were saying.

As soon as this hit I said this will end with players being turned into employees and put under contract. NIL and the portal have basically created a system where there is no salary cap and no restricted free agency. The irony is that players complained about being treated like slaves but they are basically now putting themselves on an auctioning block.

If you think football is bad my understanding is that basketball is worse (for what it is worth corruption has always been bigger in basketball because of AAU, Merchandise company camps and underground agents) and that pretty much everyone being recruited is asking how much they are going to get. Some basketball coaches have even stated that in the future they will take fewer freshmen and work the transfer portal for proven players going forward because it has fewer risks.

We just saw what NIL can do in baseball because no one is disputing that LSU's team was bought and paid for (legally I might add).

I have zero doubts an investment of a million dollars could more than likely buy you a women's soccer or softball championship at this point.

basketball is much more dirtier, however it's probably a better gamble.. there aren't as many roster spots for you to fill.. bad news is that as much NIL money you can lure the elite players... Adidas and Nike decide if the player will sign to you or not :(

I just read where $4.7 million was spent on our guvnah's inauguration. I'm sure they could have served Boone's Farm or Mad Dog 20/20 instead of $1,000 bottles of wine and used the balance for a more worthy cause.

Guess I should have placed this in politics forum but I ain't ragging either side. The Dems would have spent something similar had Beto won.

talk about lighting money on fire. give it to someone who actually can use the money. makes no sense to give out money to kids who already are given a free education, meals, housing, etc.

To the contrary, the NCAA is doubling down on this and I think they win. No way they can let states start going against all their rules.
