For once media seems to be doing the right thing and not showing too much of what was a grisly site last night in Durham. I’ve heard he took the line drive off the face, also heard off the side of the head.

Went down hard and was convulsing for a while.

It raises the question again....why is some type of helmet not required for pitchers yet? I say this as someone usually not interested in the game over legislating something that rarely happens, but it’s got to be asked again.

Rarely happens, until you are the guy getting blasted. Maybe it was off his face and a helmet wouldn’t have helped.....but that’s still not a reason not to mandate them in the game.

You don't make it mandatory. If pitchers want to be candy asses, let em have the option. NASCAR was better with open faced helmets and no required head restraints and I can't watch bull riding if the rider is wearing a helmet.

Perhaps. I was thinking to ask you if you would feel the same way if you were the driver or bull rider, but I’m sure I know the answer.

I remember there was talk of helmet that was more lightweight, closer to a cap, but can’t remember why it went away.

There will likely be talk of such things again for a bit, and then talk will go away again.

You’re talking to a guy that grew up riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. Never wore a helmet. I also work at a mine and the only reason I wear a hard hat and steel toes and use fall protection is because I have to.

Fair. I read up more since yesterday and understand things better. They are an option that’s out there, but no one wants to wear it for various reasons, some that even make sense to me. It seems to me that what needs to happen is innovation that can provide a light weight protection, as what currently exists doesn’t work well with how pitchers move.

And, again, I don’t know that a helmet helps Zombro on where he got hit, which was the side of head/face, I think. A face mask could maybe have helped some, but even I understand clearly why a face mask doesn’t work well for pitchers.

Just a grisly part of the game, I guess. I low odds outcome that doesn’t happen often, but can be life altering when it does.
