UCLA says it was left with no other choice but to take the money that the Big Ten Conference threw on the table. After the last three years — including COVID lockdowns, an empty Rose Bowl and empty basketball arenas — the Bruins’ athletic department managed to create a $102.8 million deficit, according to the L.A. Times, and it desperately needed a golden parachute from B1G bag man, commissioner Kevin Warren.

You have to think that Stanford and Cal probably have similar problems.

That's how Maryland came to join the conference as well.

Larry Scott really fucked them.. He should have let UT in with the LHN, his PAC network would have been carried on all providers with the addition of UT.

At the same time, I'm glad he did say no to UT.. the more I look at it, I don't think it would have been a good conference for us long term either

That is exactly what I was thinking. This is Groundhog Day on the other coast. So...................if you need a bail out, call the B1G?

If you need a bail out (and are a school of a certain profile), then yes, call your B1G friends.

They will happily take you in, pay off your debts, and take over your market. Assimilate!

Haven’t they always played in an empty stadium?
Pre-COVID, the stadium was always full, even when they sucked (which was usually the case). When I lived in Pasadena, I generally went to a few games a year with friends who were alumni. It’s a cool place to see a game and pre-game on the golf course.

Was it?

In 2019 (Pre-Covid) the attendance #s were as follows:

San Diego State - 36,951
Oklahoma - 52,578
Oregon State - 48,532
Arizona State - 39,811
Colorado - 47,118
California - 38,102

Even when the Rose Bowl has the tarp out, capacity is just under 69K. They didn't even approach that number.

Looks like a Chip Kelly issue. I lived there from 2004-2015 and the games were generally full.

i still call bull shit
you gonna tell me when UCLA under Rick Neuweasle was going 4-8 they were selling out??
half full at best
i hate that guy.. he acts like he knows people in the know at Texas.. which he probably does..but they have bullshit info that he passes along on First Ride..luckily Childers always disputes it

not sure what UCLA's issue is, but Maryland invested a lot in non-revenue sports and (obviously) never got a solid return on it. Their football fan support has never been great, so it left their entire athletic department in a bad financial spot.
