The Danbury Trashers doc got me watching another one of the Untold docs….Malice at the Palace.

First, I think they have a really good sports doc series going here. Going to check more them out, but maybe not Kaitlin Jenner. Not because of the gender topics….I really don’t care about that….but because I don’t watch Kardashians.

This was a solid doc. I remember this incident, of course. I was on the Best Buy the next day spending a bonus and seeing it on all the screens all day. Along with all that righteous indignation of the media (“Thugs!!!”).

I remember gobbling that narrative up at the time. You make a commitment when you sign that contract to endure these kinds of things. I don’t quite feel that way anymore.

Yes, Artest should never have gone into the stands over a beer toss. I’ll never be OK with that. But, I can’t knock either Jackson or O’Neal as much for their actions after the whole melee starts.

The doc does a nice job of taking a run through this mostly from the players point of view. Though they do interview one fan (the fat fuck who came of the court and faced Artest up and then took the sliding jab from O’Neal). The guys clearly every bit the moron he always seemed.

Didn’t interview the beer toss guy, but showed some of his talk with cops and him in interviews….what a fucking moron.

End of the day….Artest should have been taken immediately off the court so he could never do what he did. Beyond that….you have a situation with a few players potentially against thousands of fans….and that should have counted for something in the aftermath. And the meager police presence (should have been much more security after the ECF the previous year) didn’t even come near the floor for minutes after it started. First thing they did was to try and mace Artest…..lmao.

As a Piston fan, I fucking love Ron Artest.

Reggie still looks like that guy from DeepSpace9 though.

Enjoyed this show. Gave two interesting guys and Steve Jackson a chance to tell their side.

It was kinda depressing. O'Neal was never the same, but moreso, Reggie was fucking awesome and deserved a ring, and the way he went out is a damn shame.

I forgot how close they were the year before, and how good they were expected to be that year.

Reggie is one of the most clutch players of all time. Dude was an assassin.

I saw this right when it came out. I was shocked Miller was still on the team when this happened and didn't realize this cost him what was very likely finally his championship.

I’ve never really paid attention to Jermaine O’Neal. I really liked him a lot. Jackson is always super interesting. Metta….eh…you can see that he maybe has had some therapy at least for anger issues. He’s still an odd fucking duck of course.

Deep Space Reggie….always respected but never loved him. Still, felt bad for him. Not saying they win the championship that year if not for this….but this was surely the last great shot for him.

If only the beer doesn’t get thrown/Artest doesn’t charge in.

It’s always hard to say this is what changed the trajectory of a players career….and that it might not have happened without this event.

None the less….history is there….O’Neal was really rising up and then after this…he just tanked.

Was a big fan of ONeal too. Was weird, cuz I really enjoyed that group of Pacers. Even though they were maybe Detroit’s toughest competition for a couple years.

I don’t find Jackson interesting. I think he’s a shitheel lowlife tbh.

As much as that brawl was the drunk tards fault for throwing the beer. It also was Big Ben’s fault for being a huge douche in a game that was already over.

That part gets blown out of proportion IMO.

It was November. The very beginning of the season. 8 months prior to the Finals.

Reg’ wasn’t even good at that point. The season before he played 80 games. Averaged 10 points.

Was a bit much on the pity party in this doc.

Well….I should be clearer….he’s always a shitheel….but an interesting one to me.

You’re right on Big Ben, and you found my blind spot on him. Always loved him since he won DPOY with the Magic one year. After Shaq he was the player I most wish we kept (ahead of Penny, McGrady and Dwight).

I’ll say he was dealing with his own grief at the time. But that, along with losing like this and still getting fouled hard in garbage minutes really only gets him off the hook on the hard shove to Artest for me. All the continued drama and throwing his gear around was bullshit and played its part.

While I’m here….it’s not normal to lay on the scorers table. Attests handlers (coaches, etc) should have had him off of there and at least moving to the bench. That’s admittedly a hindsight read.

That’s what I was thinking while watching this. They were saying how the had them best record…it was mid November. So many other things could have happened.

But this is the kind of thing when history is derailed early by something so big. Maybe the win it that year. It’s possible, but not guaranteed.

Reggie said it himself earlier in this doc…. the margin in the playoffs is so razor thin.

Ron is a crazy motherfucker. I’m not even going to pretend to know what he was doing lying there. But I love that he didn’t take shit from a bunch of faggy suburbanites who prolly are afraid to go to games now that they play downtown again.

Ben was never the best loser. When that’s the worst thing you can say about a guy, you know he goes about his business properly. Hard worker, great competitor and a great teammate. Sometimes great competitors don’t know when to say when.

Best thing JoeD ever did was that sign and trade of Hill. Had no idea we were getting a HOFer for a HOFer at the time.

Indians was 6-2.

Detroit was 4-3.

They kinda glossed over where the season was at, for theatrical purposes. Also left out Jermaine ONeal still being an AllStar that season. And the next two…

Shit. That’s right. I forgot the deal for Wallace got us a wrecked Hill. That was one of the most frustrating things….year after year of hoping Grant Hill comes back.

Artest said part of his therapy at the time was “count to five” (I know this tactic well). Why he had to do it on the scorers table and not the bench is beyond me. If I’m guessing….it was a thing where he had to stay right near the fray and come across like he’s not sweating nothing…..which was dumb.

Artest is borderline retarded.

I'd want him on my team tho.

Ron’s life is most likely better now because of that night.

But it cost him more money than I’ll make in my lifetime.

I think he’s actual real bright tbh. Was like a Statistics major or some shit. But he’s nuts. And used to be usually drunk. Like at work drunk. Lol

batshit crazy

Everyone knows an Artest. Everyone has played against an Artest. My Artest was a homeschooled kid, that had zero chill. Every pickup game would either end in him hurting someone, or someone wanting to kill him.

Well I was a fan of his after he almost took out Jordan. He deserved a title after that performance.

It’s just an interview in a documentary. Very controlled. But he seemed better. Still cray cray, just better. Fwiw
