Basketball players have been the most vocal on "social issues", and they're playing in a bubble, with (what I've heard) low ratings.

Not that hockey ratings had to have been very good. Even hockey fans didn't watch much of the Stanley Cup (see the thread on tHoop).

things to consider

-its October. not normally a time of year that people associate with playoff basketball
-games w/o fans are a turnoff for people.
-league has been outspoken politically and it's only geared towards one side of the political aisle. there's a huge "BLACK LIVES MATTER" logo painted on the center of the court. that can also be a turnoff for people.
-NBA was already seeing declining ratings before COVID.
