Dan Hawkins didn't do a good job, that's for sure. However, the lack of investment in Boulder is their underlying problem.

I’d say it is, but I’m also of the mindset that the only season that matters is the current season or most recent season of it’s the off-season
 
1997 Washington State under Mike Price. 10-3. Under .500 from 1992 to 1996 and 1998 to 2000. How did Mike Price survive all those other bad seasons until he turned them into a brief power in 2001. 1997 was the Crying Leaf year lol.

That predates the CFP but that's a good one.

While we're naming older ones, I'll throw in 1998 Arizona. Now they were coming off a 7-5 year and did come into the season ranked, but they never came remotely close to putting up a 12-1 record like they did. Their lone loss came to a 10-2 UCLA squad, who was undefeated until their collapse against Miami. Had UCLA held on, Arizona would have possibly went to the Rose Bowl. They went to the Holiday Bowl instead and then they failed to reach a bowl game until 2008.
 
It predates the CFP, but Illinois went 2-10 in 2006, 9-4 in 2007 with a Rose Bowl appearance, to 5-7 in 2008. Haven't won more than 6 regular-season games since then.
 
It's obviously 2018 Utah State. I mean, duh.

6-7 in 2017, 11-2 in 2018, 7-6 in 2019.
